Lexington Mayor Jim Gray filed to run for the U.S. Senate Tuesday morning as a Democrat, declaring his candidacy to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul on the day of Kentucky’s filing deadline.

Gray, 62, told the Herald-Leader Monday night that he decided to challenge Paul last week and that he “absolutely” thinks he can win despite the state’s rightward lurch and widespread disapproval of President Barack Obama.

I’m surprised that Paul has not gotten out of this race. He’s not been able to establish any traction.

If he does drop out, I hope he doesn’t take his re-election to the Senate for granted. For all of Kentucky’s rightward leanings, there’s still enough Dems in that state to make a close race for Paul.

A lot of money, not his own of course, is going to be peed down the toilet.

KY has plenty of “the democracy” in its infrastructure; somethings they get disorganized, but they are a factor never to be discounted.

I moved out of Lexington 30 years ago. I ran into a guy that was on the city council, I asked him why he quit and he told me all of the members were women including the mayor. He told me you couldn’t get a thing done now. I figure our mayor was gay also. She didn’t seem real happy about it.

IMHO, Rand Paul’s campaign is causing some damage to his reelection chances. Since it’s going nowhere, he ought to drop out and go home. I expect and hope he will after the Iowa caucuses.

This Mayor doesn’t seem like the strongest candidate the rats could have offered though, hopefully there is no trouble.

For now, I don’t think Mayor Gray will be a serious threat to Rand Paul. But if Paul stays in a race he has no hope of winning, it could be a problem.
