The other question raised by a Trump victory in South Carolina, though, is why that dynamic would change. In CNN's poll, Trump beats Ted Cruz by a wider margin among evangelical voters than he does among voters overall -- a voting bloc that is supposed to be in Cruz's corner.
(In Iowa, where the majority of Republican voters identified as evangelical, Cruz won evangelicals by 12 points. In South Carolina, Trump leads with them by 20.)
Trump also leads with conservative voters in South Carolina, although by a smaller margin than he leads overall.
If that holds, it's not clear why Trump wouldn't then win most of the other Southern states that make up the March 1 primary, much less most of the other states between now and March 15.

It won’t be long before Mega Church preachers come out against Trump.
And the GOP will try to pull a “Mississippi” if possible.
I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct. I've been challenged by so many people, and I don't frankly have time for total political correctness.
And to be honest with you, this country doesn't have time either.Donald Trump
THANK YOU! The sooner FR people realize this fight is about Globalism versus Patriotism, the sooner we can be a voice to save our nation. With no nation, nothing else matters. FR posters are behaving like the general who is fighting the previous war.
No.
No one will go into the convention with enough votes for the nomination. That is where the decision will be made.
Trump vs. a pair of Cuban heels.
Yes by Hillary.
Seems to me Hillary, Rubio, Bush, and Kasich are a lot more likely to start a nuclear war than Trump or Sanders. After all, they want to go to war with Russia to make Syria safe for Jihadists and who how “tough” they are. And they seem to have learned nothing from Iraq and Libya.
“Cruz endorsed by James Dobson today.”
Focus on the Bankrupt H-1B Family?
Yes
No. I have been voting but I don’t see that it has made any difference at all. Give me someone I can trust and I will show up.
You may be right. But I think assumptions that Trump can/will beat Hillary or even Bernie are waaaay premature. First, if Trump gets the nomination he will not have the full and practical support of the RNC apparatus AND money. He will still be fighting the “establishment “, to say nothing of people on the right who will simply not vote for him, period.
Put that against the Dems machine - regardless of who their nominee is, it will get ugly. We haven’t seen ugly yet. All the things that freepers opposed to Trump are posting and warning about, all that and more.
I understand the support here and elsewhere for Trump is passionate and singleminded. But you know, having studied politics for years, the general is utterly different than primaries.
:)
Yep
Right now, about the only people who haven’t endorsed Cruz are the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and Caitlin Jenner. . . . . stay tuned.
The way Obama has set up the dominoes, it may not matter who gets elected. I am not absolutely certain we will make it to the next president. And I don’t trust any of the those whose names you mentioned. Putin would run all over Sanders and Sanders would be happy to join him in global socialism/communism. So yeah, we may could avoid war that way, by surrender.
The big, winner-take-all states later on the calendar are closed primaries.
It's possible to finish 4t5h or 5th in everything up until March 15th.
After that a candidate must WIN outright to get anything.
This election season doesn't even really start until then.
And the democrats influence is nearly nil. Probably less.
Your choice.
But you should not really call out Trump for statements made while he was doing business with democrats.
Look at the positions on his website. These are the statements made by a politician.
Now, I freely admit that most politicians are full of it. But somehow Trump does not impress me as being the run of the mill politician. So I support him as start to get my hopes up that this time some movement will be made.
And I would bet that you will see more conservative actions out of Trump than you expect. And what he goes for, he will likely see it through.
