Trump asks voters to boycott Apple: 'I think that's a great idea'
Washington Examiner ^ | 19 Feb 16 | GABBY MORRONGIELLO

Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.

"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"

"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.

"Boycott Apple," he repeated.

"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."

The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."

"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information – I think that's a great idea."

What they’re asking for now is something that they’ve never requested before, and it’s more than a little dangerous.

You’re correct, it’s a 5C

Cruz On San Bernardino iPhone Question: Of Course We Should Unlock Their Phones”

I’m fully aware of what Cruz said, and this is one issue in which I disagree with him. That said, I did not hear him call for a boycott of Apple, which is what I was responding to. It’s one thing to take the position that the FBI should be able to unlock the phone, it’s quite another for a POTUS candidate to call on his followers to boycott the company over it.

I'm on Apples side.

Me too. Compromising everyone's privacy is the worst approach to fighting terrorism. Ironically Trump has also proposed the best approach - keep the muslim savages out!

So this doesn't change my vote for Trump.

The government is demanding that Apple create a software tool with dangerous ramifications.

Cruz didn’t call for a boycott against Apple over this, though..

To say that McAfee is full of it would be an understatement.

Thanks for this info, and thanks to you, I can avoid the long boring link.

Pretty sure the phone in question is a 5c...(owned by the County of San Bernardino by the way...terrorist work phone)....it has the type of security I mentioned. The newer iPhones (5s, 6 and 6s) add a fingerprint reader and a dedicated security chip.

Terrorist work phone is very interesting.

Not at all. Apple is either afraid of losing business or afraid of the enemy to the point of endangering security. Both are unacceptable for such a monopoly

Or perhaps they don't want to destroy the security of their products.

Apple is absolutely right about this. The government is doing it's normal totalitarian thing. I'm sick of it. If the feral government would do it's job, it wouldn't need to worry about this crap. Instead, it's worried about being accusing of 'profiling' if it looks at the facebook posts of terrorist infiltrators.

Exactly. This situation is simply being used like a school shooting would be against gun rights. And Trump is apparently falling for it.

As are many others. It's depressing.

Trump better hurry and buy a Samsung or something. He’ll be having twitter withdrawl during his boycott.

There may come a time, if we elect Cruz, when we can trust the government but I don’t want a backdoor opened into my phone.

I'm a Cruz supporter, but this doesn't hold any water with me. I don't care who is president. He won't be president forever, and the ability to hack our phones will live on past him.

Exactly. One of Apple's biggest legal arguments in this case is that the feds' request that they create a new version of iOS (which would enable the phone to be unlocked using brute force techniques) creates an "unreasonable burden." As soon as Apple creates the version of iOS the feds are seeking here, you can bet that any time the feds want info from a locked phone in the future, they would run to court arguing that "we know for a fact that Apple possesses a software tool that would enable us to unlock this phone," and thus that there is no additional burden from requiring them to use the software again.

Yup. Now, how hard do you think it will be for the feds to have some compliant judge to robo-sign every single request submitted? I figure it would take about 1 minute.

You don’t know that. John Mcafee may have a team that is more than up to the task.
