Tribune Publishing, owner of the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers, said Thursday it won the bankruptcy auction for The Orange County Register and The Press-Enterprise in the face of a looming antitrust fight.

After a marathon, contentious auction that started Wednesday morning and went deep into the evening, Tribune said its $56 million cash bid was the winner over Digital First Media, publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News and Long Beach-Press-Telegram, and an investor group headed by Rich Mirman, CEO of Freedom Communications, owner of the Register and Press-Enterprise.

Evidently, the potential for undue political influence is a very big, big deal. Most business types are looking for at least a 15-20% ROI irrespective of political persuasion.

This entity either has that potential, or its value is not in ROI but something else. Could that be Return on Liberal Views and Influence Investment?

I’m not sure this will go through. The anti-trust division of the DOJ is objecting to the Times buying the Register.

Great, now we can all have the same leftist propaganda that made the Times so great.

What the Government is actually going to enforce Anti-Trust laws for once?

The guy spent the money knowing full well the Democrats have his back. The Democrats will button this thing up quickly so they can put the purchase by one of their strongest allies to good use this upcoming election cycle.

LAT can skirt going BK, but finds the resources to silence a key conservative publication.

We all know that John McCain is going to get right on this one and stop it. You know... just like he always does.

My grandfather was forced to sell his business to a Chicago-based company that completely monopolized his industry in the surrounding states. There was nothing moral or ethical about the takeover- it was brutal. And the government (Republicans inclusive) was more than okay with it.

In this case I agree with the DOJ. One of the worst things to happen in recent years is the consolidation of media outlets in a small number of hands.

You probably remember when “KRLA” was the family owned KIEV and featured the late, great George Putnam. George was the real deal, he was a conservative broadcaster when that was rare, before we were overrun by Celebrity Conservatives of the Conservative Media Complex.

“What the Government is actually going to enforce Anti-Trust laws for once?”

For 30 years of more there has been little interest in prosecuting anti-trust. Robert Bork believed that Microsoft was using its vast market power to effectively create a monopoly in computer operating systems but that didn’t go very far. And now Linux is arguably valid competition for those who want it.

I always liked George Putnam. “That’s one reporter’s opinion. I welcome yours.”

My job allowed me to catch his radio show every day. A real meeting place for conservatives in the years before the internet. There’s no one like him on the radio today. And even worse the neocon vermin at KRLA took over his old station.

This is bad news because the Orange County Register was fairly conservative. And the LA Times is leftist.

Agree. No doubt about it, but with this DOJ, under this Democrat administration I don’t believe they’ll make the move to block the purchase. It’s totally in the interest of the Democrat party to let this happen. I say they lying again.

BTW did you know George was one of the last of the old time Democrats? A lot like Zell Miller, and Victor Davis Hanson. All were/are Democrats, but true America loving conservative Democrats.

BTW I remember when KRLA was one of the top rock ‘n roll stations in Los Angeles with all the top disc jockeys. It was KRLA versus KFWB back then. At the top of the dial was the third place KDAY.

When the preset buttons started appearing on the car radios those were the most popular stations to set.

OC Register is conservative only in its editorial section.

It is iberal on its news reporting. The words “illegal aliens” or “illegal immigrants” cannot be used by their writers (I asked and they confirmed). And one of their opinion writers wants a ban on AR-15s.

Great, now we can all have the same leftist propaganda that made the Times so great.

I dropped the OC Register years ago because it was turning into an apologist and then cheerleader of illegals. It doesn't matter that the LA Slimes has bought them because they were already indistinguishable from each other.

I dropped my subscription also mainly because newspapers are obsolete. Still I think the Times is worse.

I don’t recall KDAY. KRLA, KFWB and KHJ are what I remember. Then came the FM revolution.
