Girl, 12, who dreamed of studying at Cambridge died from sepsis

A young girl who dreamed of studying at Cambridge died of sepsis after being sent home twice by an NHS weekend walk-in centre. An inquest heard medics missed opportunities to save twelve-year-old Franchesca Pawson when she visited an NHS walk-in centre twice in a weekend. She was told to take paracetamol and ibuprofen at the centre, after nurses failed to detect the infection was spreading through her body. Her mother Elsa took her to the clinic in Derby on Saturday 10 January last year, because had been unwell for five days and was complaining of fever, a high temperature and a rash. Notes were not kept and the schoolgirl was not properly checked before being sent home with antibiotics, an inquest heard. She was seen by two nurses, the first examined her for “two to three minutes” before passing her on to another member of staff after diagnosing “a viral infection”. She told the concerned mother to give her daughter painkillers. The coroner said this was a "missed opportunity to escalate Franchesca's care". Franchesca, who was born in Ecuador, returned the next day when her condition failed to improve, but was given antibiotics and again sent home. The next day, just 48 hour after first being seen, her parents rushed her to Royal Derby Hospital, where she died. In a narrative conclusion Louise Pinder, deputy coroner for Derbyshire, ruled that Franchesca died from natural causes, namely toxic septic shock associated with necrotising bronchopneumonia. But she added: “The significance of her deteriorating condition over the weekend went unrecognised by the healthcare professionals who assessed her. “The bronchopneumonia remained undiagnosed and therefore untreated until Sunday afternoon. The empyema remained undiagnosed, despite chest pain, and therefore remained untreated until her admission to hospital on Monday.

Twice she went to the walk-in clinic and twice she was sent home. This was referred to as a missed opportunity by the coroner. Incompetence really. And most of the British love their NHS. They are terrified of the medical costs that might be incurred here. I have a friend from Britain who, when told about Obamacare in 2010, said 'that's wonderful.....now I won't have to buy medical insurance when I come visit'. And just as an aside, I have been to the walk-in clinics lately and there are never doctors there anymore, just nurse practitioners. As Obama said, 'most of the time you don't need a doctor to look at you; we can make more use of our nurse practitioners and physicians assistants'. (paraphrase)

The important thing is that it was free.

You get what you pay for.

Pay more, see lesser care professionals.

On the flipside, for some cases it may be better, nurses may/might spend a little more time dialoging with the patient.

Government has no business in healthcare, anywhere, anyhow and anytime.

Reminds me of sick call in the Army. Sit down with a PFC with a book. He’d ask questions, the book would tell him which questions to ask next, and if you worked through the questions correctly, you get to see the PA.

Well trained nurses should recognize when you require a doctor’s attention.

This is medical malpractice of a criminal nature. Her doctors should go to prison and never be allowed to practice medicine again.

Their incompetence killed that child.

Couldn’t agree more. Sarah Palin’s ‘death panels’ is an accurate assessment. The only way Government health care reduces cost is to deny care. Tort reform, the ability to shop for insurance across state lines, etc......there were all sorts of ways to reduce costs, but this Government just wanted the control.

The UK NHS is despicable. Soon to be here. Lots of horror stories coming out on them.

Know the NHS all too well. Don’t even get me started. With my pregnancy and birth to the death of my FIL. They don’t give a $hit about ‘life’.

Agree. My FIL needed to be in the hospital near the end of his life, but the NHS just sent out a visiting aide twice a week to check on him and change his dressings. His care (or rather lack of it)made me sick to my stomach when I saw him 2 months before he passed. And there is nothing the citizens can do against the NHS.

I had my daughter in England 16 years ago. My water broke and the NHS let 60 hours go by before they preformed a c-section. Dirty hospital, rude staff, filthy bathrooms.... I was so happy to come back to America with my baby a few weeks later.

That’s what my British friends and relatives think.....really. They are terrified of having to pay for ‘American style medical care’. But then the wages there are so low compared to here........and don’t you remember the recent Olympics in London?? How they glorified the GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children).....how wonderful it was and what great care the children were getting FOR FREE?? Propaganda....nothing more....in the run-up to our 2012 election.

it’s already here..... ever try to see a real doctor when you are sick? No, my friend, most offices demand you see a lesser trained “practitioner” such as a physician ASSISTANT or nurse practitioner.... lower levels of training and inferior care open the doors to more misdiagnosis and mismanagment. Certainly real doctors can miss-treat patients too, but I favor the odds when the doctor who spend 4 years in medical school and 4+ years of residency etc are behind the stethoscope.
Next time you are flying commerciallyy, ask yourself: do you want the flight attendant to land the plane, or the better trained pilot?
In the name of lower cost, we are dumbing down health care....let the patient beware!

It’s already here. Look at the VA. My best friend’s dad from college was a thoracic surgeon for the VA. Way back then, he told us of the horrific conditions.

This is where we are going when we no longer see a doctor but a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant. So terrible to lose a child needlessly.

I’m so sorry. It was the same with my FIl. They, basically, send them home to die.
