Palmyra after Isis: images taken following Syrian recapture offer hope amid ruins

The first images to emerge from the ancient city of Palmyra after Syrian regime forces expelled Islamic State fighters have shown large swaths of destruction but also suggest that several important archaeological sites are intact.

The extremist group had destroyed some of Palmyra’s most treasured artefacts, including the Temple of Bel and the Arch of Triumph.

However, some of Palmyra’s ruins appear to have survived, including the Agora and the celebrated Roman theatre.

[Maamoun] Abdelkarim, [Syria’s antiquities chief] said a team of archaeologists would go to Palmyra in the coming days to assess the damage to its monuments, and pledged to rebuild the destroyed temples and arch.

Isis seized Palmyra in May 2015. The fall of the city gained worldwide attention as it hosts some of the most well-preserved ruins of antiquity. As well as destroying the iconic temples of Bel and Baalshamin

and the Arch of Triumph

, the group looted graves and used the amphitheatre to stage executions. The amphitheatre

Isis fighters also killed the archaeologist who had looked after the ruins for 40 years.

State TV said troops were working on clearing mines from the town and its monuments, where numerous booby traps were laid down by the militants before their retreat.

Who the hell put you in charge?

Just trying to promote universally accepted good discussion habits. It's all my initiative.

Should we all ask you if its ok before we post something?

No, I don't want this burden.

Try not to get too shocked when a thread about Palmyra winds up discussing the civil war in Syria.

I need something more than that to get shocked.

Why is the world allowing this?

Because the world doesn't want to risk his life.

Assad’s merry band of cutthroats has killed in excess of 90 percent of the dead in the Syrian civil war, ISIS just crowed about what they did. Millions have fled Syria during the four years (four so far) and there are no prospects that they’ll ever be able to return.

But the top story? An Israeli homeowner crushed the hopes and dreams of Palestinian victims of the Occupation by installing a swag lamp over his pool table, an act that also triggered mass murders in Paris and Brussels.

You are 100% correct that the current Assad is nothing like his father. All he wanted to REALLY do was practice Opthamology in London but after his brother (Taher?) the next in line, died (”mysteriously”) in a car accident, his dad called him in.

When the Alawite tribe calls you in, you go, like the Cosa Nostra in Sicily. The family calls, you drop everything and show up.

Assad the junior is no Homs 1982 but all the old school hardcore Syrian generals (like Mustafa Tlas) still held the reigns of power and guided the young Opthamologist into power.

This happened around the time of Gulf War II and due to American thrusts into the Middle East, Syria quit her occupation of Lebanon and ushered in the “Cedar's Spring” revolution in Lebanon that petered out when the PM Harri was blown to bits. Now it's chaos and no government in Lebanon as their trash piles up.

Assad junior never wanted to be a tyrant but was forced to become one in this civil war. Anyway you cut it, Assad junior is indeed a war criminal but in the Middle East (except Israel) most leaders there are war criminals...

Thanks for the ping.

It looks like they have a lot of restoration work to do.

The Islamists who would destroy relics of the past in order to impose a miserable present are pure evil.
