After weeks of uncertainty and foot-dragging, the Appeals Court this week made a critical ruling, setting the stage for a potential shakeup in Turkish politics that may block President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s drive for an executive presidency.

The court gave the green light for the Nationalist Action Party (MHP) to hold a convention requested by in-house dissidents seeking to remake the party, whose erosion in recent years has played directly into Erdogan’s hands. Leading the dissidents is Meral Aksener, a rare female heavyweight on Turkey’s political scene, whose fortunes may now change not only the MHP’s but also Turkey’s course.

My BIL and his friends are my friends, good people, and old style Turks. They hate Edogan with an interesting Mediterranean hatred Those who are still Turkish citizens pay a lot to go back and vote against him! They hate him!

The Muslims have never hesitated to assassinate “uppity” women.

Your Turkish friends must be old fashioned admirers of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the secular Turkiye he created as a bulwark against crippling Islam which he hated as an Arab invention.

In the late 1960’s at NATO AFSOUTH HQ in Naples we found our Turkish allies to be much better company than the arrogant Papandreou worshipping Greeks.

Ataturk’s Hat Law is my favorite of his reforms. He abolished the fez & in the 1990’s it was still a symbol of dangerous regressive Islamism.

“Your Turkish friends must be old fashioned admirers of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk “

Correct! And they are all the kind of people we want to emigrate here! My BIL has built a company that makes special diamond tooling for our aerospace industry. A wonderful husband to my Sister, a great father to my Niece, and a dear trusted friend. Not a very religious person.

" The latest ultranationalist casualty in Syria to make the headlines was Ibrahim Kucuk, the deputy head of the MHP branch in Istanbul's Fatih district. He was killed in a Russian raid on Mount Turkmen in Bayir Bucak, where he had fought for two months. A well-known leader in the Islamic community led the prayers at his funeral in Istanbul last week; among the senior MHP lawmakers attending were Oktay Vural, Celal Adan and Meral Aksener. An even more noteworthy mourner was Alparslan Celik -- the Turkish fighter in Syria who shot dead the pilot who ejected from the Russian jet Turkey downed in November. "
