"Why is this (gorilla) story gaining so much attention?"

Because the media is SENSATIONALIZING EVERYTHING these days.

There's so much competition for breaking news, unique angles, and dramatic stories among the media and their writers, reporters, pundits, producers, directors, hosts, "experts" and "analyists" that they have to latch onto any incident, cherry-pick controversial sound-bites, pick at every minor nit and scab, exaggerate this and downplay that..... all the while they emphasize the bizarre, whip up emotions, slant things, leave things out, lie about things, fake things, manipulate things, attack whom they hate....all to grab headlines and lure readers, listeners and viewers to their particular media site and individual personas.

Within the media it's constant dog-eat-dog rivalry and pressure, competition and power trips.

Why does Fox flash the blaring "BREAKING NEWS !!!!!!" every 15 minutes when most of isn't genuine "breaking" at all...and now they all do it. It's because it's all about "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!"....and the end result of this frenetic media maelstrom is the fact that REAL professional journalism be damned and, as Hannity said tonight...no longer exists (with some exceptions of course).

“You’re dealing with either human life or animal life here. So what is the decision? I think it’s very simple to figure that out.” - Jack Hanna

100% spot on, no decision necessary.

What if the gorilla had hurt or killed the child?

Yeah, the press likes to show that picture of him with his arm around the kid "protecting" him. What they don't show is the couple of times he is dragging the kid through the water where the kids head is hitting the concrete and could possibly have dislocated the kids arm.

I SO agree with everything you said...it's time that WE the American People shut down the media...all of it, the paid talking heads and radio show hosts; the online media twits; and the Clinton News Network...BOYCOTT!!!

Don't watch, don't listen and read only those articles that are not put on here by people who are still trying to take down Trump, like Huffington Post and the like, and we all know who runs these 24/7....this is the only way we can get this stopped, if we don't listen, watch or read garbage that they put out, they will stop...look at Target, they won't accept the truth, but it's the boycott that is causing this...look at what happened with Chick-fla-lay when we stood up for them...and just look at where Trump is today by all of us American People and Voters that are behind him....we can do this!!!

Have any of those who object to the killing of the animal stopped to consider what they themselves would have done if they were in charge when the kid was being dragged around the animal habitat? The zoo officials/staff did exactly the right thing under this awful situation that required immediate action. How anyone can see it any other way is a mystery. As far as responsibility for how the kid wound up in there: that is a totally different question.

You are forgetting that the zoo workers had a great deal of experience dealing with Harambe the gorilla. They also had experience dealing with gorillas of Harambe’s type and felt they were in an unpredictable situation that needed a quick resolution. If Harambe had killed that child, I am sure the lawsuit would have meant the closing of the zoo and a huge monetary judgement against the city. This is not a situation to for the amateurs to second guess.

Of course not. None of these idiots have thought about what if they were in charge, and had to make a quick decision in a fast moving situation such as this. It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback, and form an opinion based on what the media tells them to think.

The media have been reporting that there is “growing outrage” about this.

Is there really growing outrage, or have the media decided to say there is outrage, to justify their major coverage given to this story????

For whatever reason, the media have decided to make this into a Cecil the lion story.

Also, all these second guessing idiots, are in effect saying that their judgement after the fact, is superior to the judgement exercised by experienced animal handlers, who had to make quick decisions as this event was happening.

We are supposed to believe that these 2nd guessers, who love animals but have no clue how to handle a gorilla, are somehow more knowledgeable about what should have happened, than the experienced animal handlers who work at a zoo.

Go figure.

Yep. They were able to ruin the circus by forcing them to get rid of all of the elephants so you are probably right on target with what they are going for next. Just really aggravates me - often wonder what makes them think they have the right to ruin things for everyone else just because they have nothing better to do with their time.

My oldest grandson is an ag major in a college in Oklahoma. McDonald’s Corporate staff is really pushing the free range, uncaged chicken issue and is pumping a lot of $ into those programs.

The gorilla may have hurt or killed the kid even inadvertently.

Would have, without question. The available videos show it clearly.
The dumb beast has no judgment of the consequences of dragging a human child around the way it was happening.

For fifteen glorious minutes of his life, that boy was totally safe.

Beautiful comment on a very sad situation.

Negligent parents.....the child had already expressed a wish to visit the gorilla.

What all of these libs ARE saying is that the Gorilla is more important, more loved and more respected than a black child.

That’s not a matter of opinion, perspective or perception. Libs wanted the gorilla more than the black kid.

And that’s not even shocking - Libs will call out and send money to support the murder of black babies. They hate black kids. Demonic spite.

When the kid was thought to be white, they searched for answers. And the searching ended the moment the kid was found to be black. From there it was shaming the parents, threatening to kill the parents and having a longing to have shot the kid instead of the silverback.

In the end, you rely upon one single guy who will view the issue, and make a split-second decision. You can arm-chair quarterback all you want, but if you weren’t there...you can’t say much. I’m betting the guy who made the decision never expected this type of scenario to unfold and it was simply luck on the events of the day.

If zoos don’t want all the bad PR...then build enclosures that no one can fall into or climb into. It amazes me that we don’t have a hundred of such events to occur each year with nuts trying to climb into some pit with tigers.

The dumb beast has no judgment of the consequences of dragging a human child around the way it was happening.

Insofar as "dumb" means "unable to speak", I think we can accept this statement, keeping in mind that the consequences of the action you mention were evidently nil.

It's a fascinating idea, the mind of a gorilla, because it seems evident that he is indeed possesed of mind, akin to us, but yet alien to us. We can recognize it, but we cannot comprehend it. Surely in this case, his mind was filled with confusion and uncertainty. I have no doubt his mood could turn on a dime in those circumstances, and it's impossible to second guess the actions of the authorities in putting down this gorilla, but even so I would count his death as a tragedy.
