Grandmother with gun confronts intruders in her house
CBS12 ^ | Al Pefley

Posted on 07/04/2016 4:36:49 AM PDT by Hojczyk

She said she had no idea if the intruders were armed. But she was not about to become a victim.

She had a gun and she was ready to use it.

"I raised the gun and pointed it at his face," she explained.

She says the three guys were mortified and shocked to see a woman aiming a gun at them.

"I called them bastards and I said I'm gonna kill you! All three of them started running for the door," she told CBS12.

You can still see the damage they did to the front door, where they broke it down when they came in.

She says they were in the house for maybe 30 seconds. They didn't steal anything.

"I think it was the worst day of my life. It was the most horrifying day of my life. I couldn't believe it, I thought it was a bad nightmare," she said.

She's just relieved she had a handgun to defend herself with.

"I think it's wonderful. I think it's the only thing that saved me. It was my Godsend. I don't know what I would've done without it. I've never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was horrible, to have three strangers in your house and ransacking it. I was very angry. It's like, how dare you do this! You know. This is our home," the woman said.

Because of this incident she's telling her neighbors if they don't have a gun, they should think about getting one.

She and her husband also intend to get a bigger, more powerful handgun to replace the .22 that she now has. She plans to go to a shooting range and practice to make sure she's ready if it happens again.

A .22LR is more than enough gun for anything you might encounter. The uninitiated greatly underestimate the .22LR round. Unless you are shooting from a great distance it will get the job done.
However, for home defense a shotgun is the weapon of choice. You don’t have to be accurate and it can bring down a bear.

To big to swing in tight spaces. And many woman I shoot with can’t deal with the recoil. A short little pistol caliber semi auto carbine or a pistol.....either with safety slugs so as not to kill grandpa in another room.

Not in “this” story though.

Also I would never encourage situational lying to anybody.

I never said “lie”. A dead perp has no ‘his side of the story’.

I have a "youth" variety Mossberg and I don't have a lot of "tight spaces" at Buttons Manor. :)

The recoil is nothing with a light shotgun -- I'm well under 100 pounds and I have no difficulty with it. My aim is awful and the shotgun would correct for that, just like a bottle of Windex beats a fly swatter.

a pistol.... so as not to kill grandpa in another room.

The typical grandpa would not be in another room waiting to absorb lead. If he's on site at all he's going to be either front line or backup. Grandfathers are survivors of many hostile actions. I'd have mine on hand 24/7 if I could!

This being Florida and like you say the Castle Doctrine is in effect here.
Though no prosecutor in Florida would charge here cause no jury would convict her for defending herself from three thugs who’d just kicked in her door.
Had she shot each as they exited she’d still skate here.
Fear for her safety and the fact these guys in fact did a B.& E on her.

Why of course, but God knows “lie” when it is even implied.

We have a 5th amendment for this purpose. There’s no need to lie.

Got it

Just went to the range with a fairly proficient shooter who I shoot in Cowboy Action matches with. She is well over 100 lbs and shoots pistol and rifle in cowboy style better than me (as in I am slow as ship and she is fast). She asked me to show her how to shoot clay birds. She brought a small 20 gauge and wore a shoulder pad. 4-5 shots later, she was done. Too much fun for her.
I’ll have to admit though. The thought of walking into a room and hearing a pump shotgun slide being racked is enough to make anyone head for the nearest door.

Even light bird shot will kill in a close in house setting. OO will penetrate walls. I would go with #4 buck (.24”) indoors. Way more power than is needed indoors and less wall penetration.
Personally I keep my 1911 loaded with 230 gr soft points and don’t expect to miss center mass.
