Looks to me like the off-duty cop did what I would do in that same situation. Nothing wrong at all.
I’ll just note that some cops exhibit poor but aggressiving driving in their cop cars while on duty.
More than one pavement ape has sucker punched victims that died from it.

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that... How often do cops move from one city to another and get a job in the police dept. of the 2nd city? Maybe that’s what happened? Otherwise, sounds like he just made it in under the age limit for rookies.

My default position is to be highly suspicious when a cop kills a citizen, but in this case there appear to be more than enough mitigating factors to perceive it as prima facie legitimate.
I will, however, note that a regular citizen in NYC wouldn’t have the option of using a firearm in self defense.

The thug with 19 arrests and known violence strikes someone in the head while the victims is trapped in a car. Unable to fight back while thug tries to go all knock-out game. Well, thug loses.
I’m not crying over his death.
Just think how many future victims of his anger are now saved from his violence.
And yet it sounds kind of stupid for the officer to have rolled his own window down far enough to get punched through it. Pointing the gun at the assailant through the never-opened window should get the message across.
Witnesses should be interviewed and any video made public. Will they be? Who knows.

The story is a jumbled mess.
It is not very smart to rush up to a guys window and punch him in the head. More then one persons has been killed by punch on the head.
That is the Jack Booted Thugs STATEMENT, the Regular Citizen Witnesses tell an entirely different story. But you would know that if you actually read the article. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES would I ever BELIEVE ANYTHING A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE SAYS, EVER!! Especially a Cop.
OK,so "racism" won't be the chant here.Given that the dead guy was "well known to the police" I'd certainly be willing to listen very carefully to the cop's explanation of the incident.
No racism....so assuming that the cop was justified (which is usually the case with cops IMO) the family is motivated by $$$.If Al Sharpton's daughter can sue NYC for $5 million for a sprained ankle these people can sue for far more.
Small had a rap sheet that included 19 arrests and three terms behind bars.
A fine upstanding citizen for sure.
