Push to create Utah monument marks latest Western land fight

BLANDING, Utah (AP) -- Laminated sheets of paper held in place by rocks rest inside ancient cliff dwellings nestled underneath a spectacular red rock overhang in southeastern Utah.

"Don't erase the traces of America's past," the signs read. "Please do not enter interior rooms."

The weathered signs and a similar warning at the trailhead are the only protections in place for these easily accessible ruins along a canyon hiking path.

Opponents agree the area is a natural treasure worth preserving but fear a federal designation would create restrictions on oil and gas development as well residents' ability to camp, bike, hike and gather wood.

The management system in place from state and federal agencies works, said rancher Kenny Black, who has cattle grazing permits within the proposed monument.

"These areas are sacred to me because I've grown up here," said Black, a descendant of Mormon pioneers. "They're part of my history and my culture as well."

"The bill introduced Thursday calls for protecting about 4.5 million acres in the state, including 1.4 million acres of the Bears Ears area, and to open up 1 million acres for recreation and oil and gas development. Another bill released Thursday would bar the president from declaring a monument in seven Utah counties, including the Bears Ears region."

Heads up, Utah!

Utah needs to ignore the Clinton/Riady land grab and start mining that clean coal deposit again.

We’re at the point where any locale where an indian has ever taken a squat is “sacred”.

If you want to have an insight into who those ancients were, go to a reservation. Their descendants are living the same Neolithic lifestyle to this day, not counting all the free stuff you’ve bought them, and of course the Aquanet hairspray.

The ancients did not huff Aquanet.

That was the Escalante Staircase region. It is vast, and a fullsize open pit mine could be dug there without a tourist ever seeing it.

There are quite a few isolated recoverable coal deposits throughout the SW. Power plants were originally scheduled for the Kaparowits Plateau and near the Burnham-crownpoint section of the Navajo reservation years ago but cancelled because of protests.

The ultimate goal of the eco-nut LIB moonbats is to keep everyone off our land. The Citizens own it...not these asshat bureaucrats and criminal politicians.

...but cancelled because of protests.

Do you know if these protests where by the typical liberal goofballs or by the native tribe?

They were cancelled back in the 1970s during the Indian problems caused by the American Indian Movement (AIM). Farmington had a serious problem then when the Fairchild plant at Shiprock laid off a bunch of people, mostly Indians, causing a takeover of the plant. This led to a mini riot in downtown Farmington during the Rodeo parade. We were a few blocks away and heard the sirens, then the tear gas.

Also, at that time several Indians were murdered by teens in Farmington which did not help any.
