From what I hear, Team Cruz was pleading him to endorse Trump. I say this not to belittle her, but to note what she struggles with: his wife is a little sick. You manage mental illness, you don't "get over it." As a politician, I would say Cruz' decision was absolutely unreasonable. But I'm not sure I could throw my wife and mother of my kids under a bus for the greater good.
I wish he or someone on his staff had had the wit to undo this Gordian knot. What I would have loved to have heard was this:
"As you all know, Donald Trump was not my personal first choice to be nominee. I experienced first-hand how hard he fights, and that fight hurt someone I love very deeply. But I want a president who fights for the American people, not for... who fights for ... not for ... [Repeat this over and over a a litany of Clinton's special interest motivations]
"So I say this to all the NeverTrump folks: be strong enough to swallow your pride, get over it.
"A lot of people love Trump's strength, his intelligence, his skills, and yes, his single-mindedness. And I think we need a president who can talk directly from the heart and from the gut. Our crisis is to grave for being polite when discussing people who massacre cops, who commit genocide in Syria, who seek the utter destruction of our way of life.
"You know, Donald didn't start out selling luxury and glamour. He started selling homes to the middle class. And government do-gooders drove him out of that market. So he became fabulously wealthy. And now he has come to put right that most basic injustice from the start of his career. To help the middle and entrepreneural classes put right the abuses of the elite policy-makers.
"But maybe you don't like Donald Trump. Well, man up, America.
"You don't have to vote for "the Donald."
"Vote for the man who will defend your sons and daughters at home and abroad.
"Vote to prevent the fiscal collapse of the United States of America.
"Vote to put American workers ahead of globalist corporations.
"Vote for someone to stand between nine unelected unaccountable legislators and the American Constitution.
"Vote so doctors can not be ordered to mutilate and kill unborn babies in their mothers' wombs.
There's only one choice, man or woman, to do that. Make up your minds to do that. And get out there and win!
If only ... {sigh}
In hindsight, he should not have made the speech (and I say that as a Cruz supporter).
All he needed to say was I don’t agree with everything Trump says but this election is too important to stay on the sidelines.
If Mrs. Cruz suffers from depression or an emotional illness (different then mentally ill), then I see there may have been an issue there, which might have caused him to not directly say “Vote Trump.” He could have said “Vote for the GOP candidate to defeat Hillary and the left.”
Good. I would have been happy with, “We can’t let Hillary win and appoint Supreme Court justices. Vote for Trump/Pence.”
Excellent, yes. Nicely done.
that would have been perfect..don’t even have to like Trump but it’s this simple..either vote for Trump or say goodbye to your freedom..that simple
Cruz is NOT the ‘saint’ he pretends to be. He has done farm more harm to his woman Hidey than anything Trump ever retweeted. Hidey wanted to be his co-president every bit as much as Hillry Clinton was to ol bjClinton.
I think he could have made the exact same speech he made but instead of the “vote your conscience” part he should have said....
“These principals I have outlined need to be protected this November. I have a lot of personal animosity toward Trump for how he behaved during the campaign. I have some doubts about how faithful he will be to the principals our party believes in but there is one thing I have no doubt about. I have no doubt that Hillary stands in direct opposition to everything this party stands for. I will be voting for the only viable opposition to Hillary and that is the Trump / Pence ticket. I urge you to do the same. To all of the people who put your faith in me over this primary season, I promise you one thing...my advocacy and faithfulness to these principals did not end with my candidacy nor will they end in November. Regardless of which candidate ultimately reaches the office of the President, I will praise them when they further the policies of freedom and criticize them when they abandon them. I will always fight for what is right just as I have done in the Senate for the past 4 years.”
This way, he says he is voting for Trump. He is encouraging other to do the same. He is keeping his word. He is not abandoning his principals. And he is leaving the door open for 2020 if Trump abandons his promises and governs as a liberal.
Exactly! He could have simply said that in light of all of the damage that Hillary Clinton has already done to this country, and out of fear of how much more harm she would do, he was putting aside his personal animosity towards Donald Trump and voting his patriotic principles in favor of the ticket that could defeat her!
He would have looked like a statesmen while still conveying his dislike of Trump as a person. I had supported Cruz early on but grew increasingly concerned about him as time went on as he seemed duplicitous and far too self serving. Last night, sadly, confirmed those opinions.
The speech Cruz made last night was fantastic aside from the obvious omission. When he finished, he should have paused and said, “oh, by the way. I am putting 100% of my support behind the next President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.”
The standing ovation would still be going.
Dangus, face it “your hero”, Ted Scruze, turned out to be a rotten turd! If you’re still “pining”for him, I feel sorry for you.
Maybe sent a video message telling Republicans to work together to win.
But he couldn't resist all the attention.
