Hillary and the [original 1960s] Black Panthers: The Real Story

Legaled.com ^ | Aug 19, 2003 | Richard Poe

I can't take it anymore. If one more person sends me that e-mail about Hillary and the Black Panthers, I'll have to be dragged away screaming in a straitjacket.

You know the e-mail I'm talking about. It accuses Hillary of helping the Black Panthers get away with torture and murder during the early 1970s. With the 2004 presidential race drawing near, the spam mills are creaking to life, flooding the Internet once more with this agitprop classic.

Unfortunately, the e-mail mingles good information with bad, sowing more confusion than enlightenment. Some versions, for instance, carry the byline of radio talk jock Paul Harvey, who says he did not write it. Such misrepresentations help Hillary defenders dismiss the e-mail as a hoax.

The story is no hoax, though. Its basic elements can be found in respected Hillary biographies and exposes such as Barbara Olson's "Hell to Pay," David Brock's "The Seduction of Hillary Rodham," Joyce Milton's "The First Partner" and Carl Limbacher's "Hillary's Scheme."

Here are the facts:

In May 1969, fishermen discovered the body of Black Panther Alex Rackley floating in Connecticut's Coginchaug River. Rackley's captors had clubbed him, burned him with cigarettes, scalded him with boiling water and stabbed him with an ice pick before finally shooting him in the head.

New Haven detectives learned that the Panthers suspected Rackley of being a police informer. Panther enforcers had tied him to a chair and tortured him for hours. Police arrested eight Panthers and later extradited Panther leader Bobby Seale from California, after a witness accused Seale of ordering Rackley's death. (1)

Campus radicals supported the Panthers. They organized mass protests in support of the so-called "New Haven Nine." Hillary was right in the thick of it.

By the time she entered Yale Law School in 1969, Hillary was already a radical celebrity on campus. Life magazine had featured Hillary in a piece titled, "The Class of '69," which showcased three student activists whom Life's editors deemed the best and brightest of the year. A line Hillary used in her Wellesley College commencement speech appeared under her photo: "Protest is an attempt to forge an identity." (2)

At Yale, Hillary helped edit the Yale Review of Law and Social Action -- a left-wing journal which promoted cop-killing and featured cartoons of pig-faced police. (3)

A series of hard-Left mentors introduced Hillary to the brass-knuckle realities of revolutionary activism. As a Wellesley undergraduate, she met and interviewed radical organizer Saul Alinsky, whose Machiavellian tactics she admired. Hillary's senior thesis supported Alinsky's call for class warfare. (4)

At Yale, Hillary found a new Svengali in the form of left-wing law professor Thomas Emerson, known around campus as "Tommy the Commie." Emerson recruited Hillary and other students to help monitor the trial of the New Haven Nine for civil rights violations. Hillary took charge of the operation, scheduling the students in shifts, so that student monitors would always be present in the courtroom. She befriended and worked closely with Panther lawyer Charles Garry. (5)

Some believe that the enormous pressure exerted by the Left helped ensure light sentences for the New Haven Nine. Whether or not this is true, the punishments were mild.

"Only one of the killers was still in prison in 1977," reports John McCaslin in the Washington Times. "The gunman, Warren Kimbro, got a Harvard scholarship and became an assistant dean at Eastern Connecticut State College. Ericka Huggins, who boiled the water for Mr. Rackley's torture, got elected to a California school board." (6)

Hillary's defenders argue that she played no "significant" role in the New Haven Nine's defense. This is semantic hairsplitting. Obviously, Hillary was less "significant" than Charles Garry or "Tommy the Commie" Emerson. But Hillary served as a trusted lieutenant to these movers and shakers. Moreover, she had a national profile as a campus activist. Hillary was no rank-and-file student protester, as her apologists claim.

Indeed, Hillary's work for the Panthers won her a summer internship at the Berkeley office of attorney Robert Treuhaft in 1972. A hardline Stalinist, Treuhaft had quit the Communist Party in 1958 only because it was losing members and no longer provided a good platform for his activism. (7) "Treuhaft is a man who dedicated his entire legal career to advancing the agenda of the Soviet Communist Party and the KGB," notes historian Stephen Schwartz. (8)

The defense of the New Haven Nine marked Hillary's initiation into the sinister underworld of the hard-core, revolutionary Left. To my knowledge, Hillary has never publicly renounced nor apologized for her role in that movement.

Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder Still Blocking the Truth

By Joseph F. Connor
June 4, 2013

excerpt...

On August 11, 1999, President Bill Clinton offered clemency to 16 unrepentant members of the Puerto Rican terrorist group FALN (Armed Forces for National Liberation).

The FALN carried out a reign of terror in America from 1974 through 1983, conducting 114 bombings including the January 24, 1975 lunchtime attack of New York’s historic Fraunces Tavern that killed four innocent people. Among the victims was my 33 year-old father, Frank Connor.

In 1981, the majority of the FALN terrorists were arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced in Chicago Federal Court to 50 to 70 year prison terms for crimes including seditious conspiracy, bomb making, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and weapons possession.

Prior to the clemency offers, supporters of the release received a reported nine meetings with White House and Justice Department officials, while victims and their families were ignored.

Incredibly, the FALN terrorists never requested clemency themselves. Instead, a “support committee” requested clemency on their behalf.

Inexplicably, the Justice Department conducted the standard investigation, which resulted in Pardon Attorney Margaret Love not recommending the terrorists’ release. However, Eric Holder, then Deputy Attorney General, fired Love and compelled her replacement, Roger Adams, to draft a neutral “options” memo which provided President Clinton the rationale he needed to offer their releases. Fourteen of the sixteen terrorists eventually accepted clemency and left prison on September 10, 1999. ..."

In 1999, Hillary was planning for her 2000 U.S. Senate run. Offering clemency to these individuals was designed to help her gain footing with New York’s Puerto Rican population of 3.5 million people. ..."

FALN bomb kills 4 at Fraunces Tavern, where George Washington said farewell to troops

Justice Story: FALN bombs Fraunces Tavern

There was a time when American terrorists moved to a Latin beat. Puerto Rican Independence was the song, and it had been pulsing in the background for decades.

On Friday, Jan. 24, 1975, it exploded onto center stage.

The place was Fraunces Tavern, the historic red- and yellow-brick restaurant on Pearl St. where, as any tour book will tell you, that most famous of American freedom fighters, George Washington, said farewell to his officers in 1783.

History would again be made at the tavern on a mild winter day 192 years later.

A lively crowd of Wall Streeters and business executives were having lunch in the Anglers and Tarpon Club, in a second floor dining room adjacent to the main building. Among them were Harold H. Sherburne, 66, whose career on Wall Street spanned four decades, and a young banker, Frank Connor, 33, who had worked his way up over 15 years from clerk to assistant vice president at Morgan Guaranty Trust. Two executives, James Gezork, 32, of Wilmington, Del., and Alejandro Berger, 28, who worked for a Philadelphia-based chemical company, had traveled to New York for business meetings.

It would be their last meal.

At 1:29 p.m., a tremendous explosion rocked the building, sending shivers up to the 60th floor cafeteria of the nearby Chase Manhattan Bank building. Firefighters found a scene of “utter havoc,” with blood- and dust-covered men and women, many in business attire, writhing in agony in the streets, or shrieking under piles of rubble, or wandering about with stunned, blank eyes.

Sherburne, Connor and Berger died on the spot. Gezork lost his fight for life later at the hospital.

Within 15 minutes — even as, the News noted, “dazed and screaming victims, one of them with an arm torn off, were being carried away” — the Associated Press received a phone call. The caller boasted that the bomb was the handiwork of the FALN, the Armed Forces of Puerto Rican National Liberation, radicals devoted to using violence to free the island from the grips of the United States.

In a note police found in a phone booth nearby, the FALN wrote, “we … take full responsibility for the especially detornated (sic) bomb that exploded today at Fraunces Tavern, with reactionary corporate executives inside.”

The note explained that the bomb — roughly 10 pounds of dynamite that had been crammed into an attaché case and slipped into the tavern’s entrance hallway — was retaliation for the “CIA ordered bomb” that killed three and injured 11, one a child, in a restaurant in Puerto Rico.

“You have unleashed a storm from which you comfortable Yankis (sic) cannot escape,” the writers warned.

Few Americans had heard of the group or its gripes before, even though the question of Puerto Rican independence had been long debated. FALN saw violence as the only path to freedom, despite the views of Puerto Rican voters, who consistently favored maintaining U.S. ties.

Witnesses said they saw two Hispanic men running from the scene just before the explosion, but police could not find them, and the investigation stalled.

More bombings followed here, including one in the Mobil Building on 42nd St. that killed an attorney, and in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Newark and Miami. Over the next nine years, FALN would take credit for more than 130 bombings that killed six, and maimed and injured scores of victims.

Each time the terrorists evaded capture.

Investigators had nothing until July 12, 1978, when another explosion uncovered an FALN “bomb factory,” in a two-room apartment in Queens.

William Morales, an FALN explosives expert, had been building a pipe bomb when something went wrong. Three-quarters of his face, six teeth, his right eye, and all but one of his fingers, a thumb, were blown off.

No firm evidence could be found to link Morales to the Fraunces Tavern attack, but his possession of the explosives — including 70 sticks of dynamite — earned him a jail sentence of 89 years.

He did not serve much time. Although he had no fingers and just one eye, Morales somehow managed to escape from Bellevue Hospital’s prison ward by using an ACE bandage to lower himself 40 feet to the ground. He fled to Mexico, and then to Cuba, where he remains, free, to this day.

No one was ever tried for planting the Fraunces Tavern bomb, although in the early 1980s, 16 FALN members, including one of the leaders, Oscar Lopez-Rivera, were arrested and convicted of plotting to overthrow the government, weapons possession, and other charges. In 1999, President Bill Clinton made the highly controversial decision, which was opposed by the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies and Clinton’s own wife, to offer clemency for FALN prisoners. His rationale: The punishments, long prison sentences of 70 or more years, did not fit the crimes.

Lopez-Rivera, who turned down Clinton’s offer, is the last FALN member still behind bars. Attending his January 2011 parole hearing was a small group of victims of FALN terrorists, led by Joseph Connor. He was 9 years old when his father died over lunch at Fraunces Tavern.

Lopez-Rivera’s bid for parole was denied and he will not be eligible again until 2021. “Finally,” Connor said in a presentation at the National Press Club in June, “some justice for our father, Frank Connor, and other victims of the FALN.”

William Morales, a bomb maker and leader of Puerto Rican terror group FALN, which was responsible for more than 120 bombings here and around the nation, was considered the prime suspect.

He was arrested back then, but managed to escape the Bellevue Prison Ward and eventually found sanctuary in Cuba, where he was protected against extradition.

When Connor talks about his father’s death, the memory feels as raw as the day it occurred.

Thanks for that. I actually didn’t know very much about them and their attacks prior. Just that they were communist revolutionary terrorists, responsible for over 100 bombings in the US. Also that Bill Clinton pardoned them with Hillary’s support, using the issue in a failed attempt to gain support from the PR community for an upcoming election.

You’re welcome. Let’s just hope her support for terrorist groups are going to be used in the campaign.

On January 27, 1998 — ten days after Matt Drudge broke the Monica Lewinsky story — Hillary Clinton told reporters at a White House press conference that the Internet needed an “editing function or gatekeeping function”.

Thanks for posting this- maybe can educate some of the younger freepers who were not exposed to these criminals in the 90’s

Ignore the putinistas and followers - I will not say I enjoy reading this - makes me want to take a shower. However it is a good reminder of what the beast is capable of- if just one more person is enlightened it will be worth the trouble.

There is more to Hillary’s Marxist-affiliations past. It will be coming out soon.

Re Charles R. Gary, the New Haven Panthers trial lead attorney. HE was the west coast counterpart to William Kunstler and a longtime identified member of the CPUSA (more important than his fellow law firm-mates Treuhaft, Burstein, but not Walker).
