Taking Trump Seriously, Not Literally
The Atlantic ^ | 9/2026 | Salena Zito

PITTSBURGH—“Running for president is a very important endeavor,” Donald Trump said. “What is more important, right?”

He leaned forward on his chair, separated by a heavy black curtain in a makeshift green room from the crowd waiting to hear him speak at the Shale Insight Conference.

“I am running because, number one, I think I will do a very good job. Number two, it’s really about making American great again.” He paused, as if realizing that repeating his campaign slogan might not seem genuine. “I mean that; I really do want to make America great again,” he said. “That is what it is all about.”

The 70-year-old Republican nominee took his time walking from the green room toward the stage. He stopped to chat with the waiters, service workers, police officers, and other convention staffers facilitating the event. There were no selfies, no glad-handing for votes, no trailing television cameras. Out of view of the press, Trump warmly greets everyone he sees, asks how they are, and, when he can, asks for their names and what they do.

“I am blown away!” said one worker, an African American man who asked for anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the press. “The man I just saw there talking to people is nothing like what I’ve seen, day in and day out, in the news.”

When he makes claims like this, the press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.

This is the most important thing in the piece!

The same could be said about Dubya, a genuine caring human being, vilified and demonized by the lying press.

Meanwhile a vile creature like Hitlery is held out as an old-fashioned caring grandmother. Barf!

A good piece, and amazingly from The Atlantic.

Exactly. The founders of ISIS is a perfect example.

Most everyone knew what Trump meant. But the stooges in the media were so insulted that they went with the literal, and actually ran fact checks (knowing he didn’t mean it that way). To make it seem like Trump was talking Obama filing business papers to start up ISIS.

The gates are all down and the signals are flashin’
The whistle is screaming in vain
If you stay on the tracks, ignoring the facts,
Then you can’t blame the wreck on the train

It’s Saleno Zito who is a right-leaning reporter. She’s done some good work on the support for Trump in PA - that doesn’t seem to be reflected in polls.

Excellent point.

Explains the MSM’s inability to take down Trump.

The old playbook does not apply, the people are too smart.

Don’t be throwing in members of the Bush Crime Family in with decent people like Donald J. Trump!

W was the guy who lied about Sadam, then after 9/11 signed the Patriot Act, crushing the Bill of Rights and created the monster known as Homeland Security, fondler of grandmas and 10 yr. olds. Then to follow up on such triumphs, he teamed up with Teddy the Swimmer on “No Child Left Behind!”

Where do you get the “warm and caring” from? His PR agent? Certainly not form his actions! His actions speak far louder than words!
