Catalonia approves independence referendum

One of Spain's richest regions, Catalonia has repeatedly fought Madrid over its right to secede. Regional president Puigdemont has vowed to proceed with the referendum even without Spain's blessing.

Catalonia's parliament approved an independence referendum vote on Thursday in spite of tensions with Madrid, which has argued that the prosperous region has no legal ground for full autonomy. The referendum it set to take place next September.

The move marks another setback for acting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who has been engaged in a deepening standoff with Catalan separatists. His conservative People's Party has repeatedly rejected requests from Barcelona to hold an independence vote, going so far as to ask the Constitutional Court to annul a July resolution from the Catalonian parliament to pursue independence.

After Thursday's vote, the Constitutional Court said it was looking into whether it could file suit against the Catalonian parliament speaker for allowing the vote to take place.

Regional president Carles Puigdemont said last week that he was still up for negotiating whether the referendum would be legally binding or not, but that he would hold it with or without Madrid's permission.

You might find that the EU isn’t happy about referendums or the idea of fifty-odd members (if more and more independence movements started up). I think at last count....there are at least twenty break-up movements underway in Europe.

I'm not sure I agree with you. One of the main reason they want their independence from Spain is an economic one to begin with.

Why does Catalonia want independence from Spain?

The economic crisis in Spain has only served to magnify calls for Catalan independence – as the wealthy Barcelona region is seen as propping up the poorer rest of Spain.

I’m only going by what my Basque friend tells me, but Barca is where you go if you want to make any money.

As my buddy always says "All them ticks and no dog? Never gonna happen".

The rest of Spain isn't going to just let their meal ticket leave.

I think within ten years, Spain will be split in three: Spain itself, Catalonia (the Autonomous Communities of Aragon, Baleric Islands, Catalonia, and Valencia), and Euskadi (Euskadi, Navarre and small part of southwestern France). They should have done this after Franco’s passing in the late 1970’s.

I assume Barca is Barcelona, which is in Catalonia. So I guess you are agreeing with me?

Well Catalonia is trying to make it 2 right now. If that is successful, then you might be right.

No doubt the ticks will fight to keep the dog as a food provider, but I always say, never say never.

There was no reason to force any groups of separate people to remain a part of Spain against their will, especially after Franco’s suppression of their cultures and languages. It’s anti-democratic. Madrid should do the right thing and let the Catalans and the Basques decide their own futures—but I won’t hold my breath that Madrid actually will.
