Baraka calls on NJ mayors to unite around safe gun tech
NJ ^

Mayor Ras J. Baraka has a message for the country's gun manufacturers: start employing safe weapons technologies, or the City of Newark will take its business elsewhere.

Surrounded by clergy and bi-partisan groups on the steps of Newark City Hall Thursday afternoon, Baraka called on all New Jersey mayors to convene before purchasing additional weapons for their law enforcement agencies and create a list of manufacturers who are listening to their concerns, chiefly: safer gun distribution practices and technologies.

"We put our money in places, with people who support what we think is right for our community," Baraka told NJ Advance Media following the press conference. "You're talking about over 560 municipalities in the State of New Jersey. If we can get a quarter of them to say, 'Look, we agree with this, and we're not going to purchase bullets, guns or whatever from these four or five manufactures until (they) do what we ask them to do.'"

One such technology is the "smart gun," a firearm programmed to be used only by the owner.

State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), who joined the mayor Thursday, sponsored a bill last year that attempted to repeal a 2002 law requiring New Jersey firearms dealers to sell only smart guns three years after they are available on the market.

Because of the restrictiveness of the 2002 law, some 2nd Amendment activists attempted to thwart the advancement of smart gun technology, according to reports.

In a 2014 interview with MSNBC, Weinberg said would introduce a new bill to repeal the 2002 law if the National Rifle Association would agree not to stand in the way of smart gun technology.

How about a “safe penis” movement? We need a program to make the penis es of his constituents inoperable outside a legal marriage and designed to explode if they ever leave a marriage and support and lead their youngster into an adulthood as responsible, self-sufficient, law abiding adults, instead of mindless reproductive units which spawn irresponsible parasites and gangbangers!! How is THAT Baracka????

This’s your hasnt thought things through. When enough gun manufacturers and ammunition makers simply stop seeking to do business with them due to bureaucratic laws, he will quietly let things go back to normal.

If these politicians really concerned with “safety”, they would offer $2000 tax credits for the purchase of gun safes, a very expensive item. But they never do this, do they?

Preview of the new CA compliant Glock. It fires nerf bullets (and not very many). I'm sure NJ would be happy with it.

So wait a minute - will the smart guns be only for NJ cops or for all the 20 or so legal gun owners in NJ? It sounds like Baracka is saying his state will not purchase regular guns unless they sell smart guns to the masses.

BTW - smart gun technology is similar to producing mass quantities of energy from wind and solar. If there ain't a market for it, then it doesn't work.

Funny how the law enforcment and military community doesn’t seem real keen on adopting this technology.

Yep, it’s not the lack of black males marrying their women, not the chained to governmental handouts and penalties when you marry, clearly not the choices one makes but those pesky evil guns that leap from the pavement into one’s hands.

RC one :" Funny how the law enforcment and military community doesn’t seem real keen on adopting this technology."

When your life is on the line, you don't want to defend yourself with unproven technology.
There is a reason why you respond with "deadly physical force" to deadly physical force or threat of deadly force.
Maybe the mayor should have his own security detail be the first to try the new technology.

Not commercially viable yet, though it’s been in development since the mid-70’s but no go yet. But let the idiots keep bawling for it. Typical uninformed politician, no time to look into what they want, they want what they want, and they want it NOW! Duhhh...urp!
