The Chinese government on Monday reinterpreted Hong Kongs Basic Law to prevent two pro-independence lawmakers from taking seats in the Hong Kong legislature. Rather than let local courts handle the matter, Beijing intervened in unprecedented fashion, without a request from local authorities. Such heavy-handedness is certain to increase Hong Kongs resentment of Chinese rule.
Sixtus Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching were among six young activists elected to the legislature in September on platforms advocating local democracy and greater autonomy from Beijing. Some of the six support a vaguely defined self-determination, others a referendum on how Hong Kong should be governed after it loses its semiautonomous status in 2047. Mr. Leung and Ms. Yau call for outright independence.

This summer officials forced candidates for the legislature to sign a loyalty pledge affirming that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of China. Several aspirants who refused to sign or whose past statements suggested insincerity were disqualified.

Two sickly men treading water together will pull each other down faster than if one can dog paddle by himself.
Saving the ChiComs didn’t do lasting damage to the Soviets and it preserved the ChiComs.

The youth of HK are waking up to the threat that are the chicoms. There will be a protest here in a few hours.
Even if they were not Communist, the Chinese would still (and still are) a ruthless, disciplined people who certainly would have one way or another gotten out from under the restrictions imposed by the United States.
Nixon/Kissinger underestimated the Chinese. Stupidly they were fooled by their genial smiles and eager to please manners. Nixon/Kissinger were very stupid in crucial ways.

They may have ended up 5 different countries, split along ethnic lines, and we would all be a lot safer.
As an aside, "Sixtus Baggio Leung" is a pretty awesome name. It evokes both the old Roman Senate, and American baseball!
