It’s already too late for gun control to work
Washington Post ^ | November 8, 2016 | Dr. John Lott

It seems obvious: Restrict gun access and people will be safer.

Indeed, in all four presidential debates, Hillary Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine have pushed for background checks on private transfers of guns. Clinton says this will “keep guns out of the hands of those who will do harm.” After each mass public shooting, President Obama has made a similar case for background checks on private transfers of guns.

But theory and practice don’t always match. Too often, gun bans or background checks don’t stop criminals and disarm law-abiding citizens, particularly poor minorities. This only makes life easier for criminals.

To start, it would be almost impossible at this point to ban all guns in the United States, where there are already 300 million guns in circulation, and more than 12 million enter the market each year. With 3D metal printers, more people will be able to make weapons that are indistinguishable from those purchased in stores. Getting rid of these weapons would require a door-to-door campaign by law enforcement officials, and even that would be of only limited effectiveness.

It’s also not clear that it would help. When Britain and Jamaica banned all guns and handguns, they saw a subsequent increase in murder rates. Even island nations, which have relatively easily-monitored and defendable borders, have faced five or sixfold increases in murder rates after guns were banned

No, gun control doesn’t work because banning firearms will only take them away from law abiding citizens. Criminals do not regard the law and will always have guns no matter what. Gun control is not about the gun, its about control...

Since when have liberals ever let empiricism get in the way of dogma?

“a door-to-door campaign by law enforcement officials”

I wouldn’t want to be that guy.

“When Britain and Jamaica banned all guns and handguns, they saw a subsequent increase in murder rates.”

Stupid libs still cannot see this simple logic.

Keeping liberals out of office is the most effective way to prevent mass shootings.

Molon labe

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” -- Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

This is a nation of hundreds of MILLIONS of people.
Is there a statistic (FBI?) two items?
A. People shot/killed by LEGALLY licensed gun owners.
B. People shot/killed by UNlicensed gun users?
Wouldn’t you just love to see/compare those figures?
In other words, the problem in this country is, I believe, positively NOT the gun, rather it is the PERSON holding the gun, and there is no way to outlaw PEOPLE, is there?

The demographics of “gun” violence reveals politically incorrect truth. It’s just like refusing to say Islamic terrorism. It is black men who commit an astonishing amount of violence using guns.

Actually, it is never too late for you to have your gun control work. I suggest practice, practice and more practice until you become good at your gun control.

He's playing Devil's advocate. It's John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime".

I am a legal gun owner.

I am also an unlicensed gun owner.

The Commonwealth of Virginia does not require a license in order to own a gun - neither do most other states.
