The three Army Special Forces soldiers killed at a Jordanian military base this month were working for a CIA program to train moderate Syrian fighters when they were shot at a checkpoint under still-unclear circumstances, U.S. officials said.
The Nov. 4 slayings of the three soldiers is believed to be the deadliest single incident involving a CIA team since December 2009, when seven officers and contractors were killed in a suicide bombing in Khost, Afghanistan.
The Fort Campbell, Ky.-based soldiers — all members of the 5th Special Forces Group — were killed by a Jordanian soldier at an entry control point to Prince Faisal Air Base near Jafr, in the southern desert about 150 miles south of the capital, Amman, according to the officials. The shooter also was wounded in what was described by U.S. and Middle Eastern sources as an exchange of gunfire.

I read an interview - somewhere, and unfortunately I don’t recall where - with a Special Forces soldier who said that he knew he was basically training these “moderates” to kill Americans. And possibly even to kill him, because you never knew when Islam was going to kick in and they were going to decide you’d given them all you could give them (such as a pass to the base and weapons knowledge) and you were expendable.
That's an oxymoron.
Oh great, I see this whole moderate Syrian Rebel program is still paying off great, just like it always will.

That's been going around for a long time my friend. My father was in the Marine Corps serving at the Frozen Chosin to Operation Starlight in Vietnam.
He spoke Spanish fluently and he went on "TDY" to Indonesia to play with the Brits and the Gurkhas, trained some "guys" in Ft Myers Florida that landed in Cuba and poked around in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
We used to make a big deal at our house by getting a world map and putting pins where he deployed or trained but we never did for the TDY assignments.
The funny thing is that we were stationed at Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms and Kaneohe Bay when he left, nobody else in his unit got to go with him. I was a kid but when they deployed the whole 1/7 would load up and go. Except when he went on those TDY things. I asked him about it later and he said it was "just training". So I guess our service guys still get assigned in other areas under the umbrella of the "State Department" to our allies.
