Why Donald Trump and his supporters want you to think protests against him are manufactured
Washington Post ^ | November 14, 2016 | Phillip Bump

One out of every 40 people in America lives in New York City. The area's population is 8.4 million, more than in 39 other states. For every vote cast for Donald Trump in the city last Tuesday, more than four were cast for Hillary Clinton; she earned 79 percent of the vote.

In the wake of Trump's victory, thousands of protesters crowded the streets of Manhattan (where Trump got fewer votes than he did on Staten Island, where the population is a third smaller) outside Trump Tower. It's hard to know how many were there, but let's assume it was 5,000 people. That would mean that a fraction of a percent of the city took time to ride the train in and make their voices heard, assuming no one came in from anywhere else. Protests of thousands of people in New York really aren't that uncommon, which could have been a reasonable thing to point out if you wanted to brush the event away.

That's not the angle that Trump and his supporters took. Instead, the president-elect and his backers decided to dismiss the protests in New York and other cities — cities that contain hundreds of thousands of people who mostly voted against Trump — as being the work of “paid protesters.” In a tweet, Trump decided that the “professional protesters,” in his formulation, were also “incited by the media,” which doesn't make much sense.

That is an excellent breakdown. Some of my friends fit into the first third. It’s still nearly pointless to try to reason with them but occasionally circumstances do present the opportunity. I’ve found that I have the chance to make one point and then drop it. It then takes time (sometimes years) for the point to have a noticeable affect on their thinking. Most of them are just growing out of it, as you say, and my input is only a small part of it.

I don’t have any friends in the 2nd or 3rd categories. Unfortunately I do have some relatives in the 2nd one. I practice absolute minimal contact with them and they seem to know better than to bring up politics in my presence.

“Bongs, not Bombs” and I had to admit, even though it was poorly made, it was at least an original thought."

It is important, if there are those instigating the demonstrations, they should be were arrested on federal charges of sedition and subversion.

I am thinking the protests are orchestrated. People don’t spontaneously “clog the streets” without being notified that a protest is happening. That means putting up notices on bulletin boards and telephone poles where students can see them. That takes an organization. Many carry hand made signs. That takes advance notification that a protest is happening so the task of getting the paint, the brushes and poster paper together can be done. Many signs are made up by committees to be handed out to the protesters. That takes an advance organization.

Also, I have seen buses used to bus the demonstrators in. That takes organization. That these demonstrations have erupted simultaneously tells me it is a national effort. That is a racketeering charge made to be issued.
