Family reveals American vanished in Afghanistan two years ago
CNN ^ | January 5, 2017 | By Peter Bergen

(CNN)Some time in May 2014, Paul Overby, an American writer in his 70's, disappeared as he was traveling between Khost in Afghanistan and North Waziristan in Pakistan -- a region rife with the Taliban and terror groups such as al Qaeda.

He has not been heard from since.

On Wednesday, his wife went public for the first time with his disappearance, providing a statement to CNN and other media outlets. . .

Overby's wife, who asked not to be identified by name, last heard from her husband on May 16, 2014, as he was preparing to cross the border into Pakistan. Until then, they had spoken every day on the phone.

Overby, who frequently traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan and was writing a book about the current war in Afghanistan, was on his way to interview Siraj Haqqani, the leader of the Haqqani network, which is a component of the Taliban and is responsible for many of most lethal bombing attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

In 2015, Haqqani was appointed deputy leader of the Taliban. The US State Department is offering a $10 million reward for information about him.

Prior to his disappearance, Overby had spent one month in Kabul and a month in Khost, an Afghan province close to the Pakistani border where the Haqqani network has a strong presence. . .

Well, at least the gene pool he would have spawned (if he could) has been “sanitized!”

Same advice I give people and include Mexico in that list.

I am a gringo married to a Mexican from Mexico. I also speak Spanish but am very white. I have stop and rob and or kill written all over me. Many years ago I would drive all over Mexico with little fear except the occasional "mordita" which translates as "a little bite" meaning a small bribe. I no longer go to Mexico with the exception of flying into a resort with transportation arranged in advance by trusted travel agents.

A couple of years ago we flew down to Cancun and were transported to the Barcelo Resort about 30 miles South. The minibus from the airport had the list of passengers that were supposed to board the bus. When we left the airport a copy of the list was given to security. When we arrived at the resort that list was matched against whom the resort knew was coming to stay at the resort. Security was very good and safe. We stayed at the Barcelo Resort. Barcelo is not cheap nor is it outrageously expensive. They were good value for money and all inclusive. All the food and drink you wanted and both were very good. I had a good time. If you want a few days in the sun, good drink, and a beautiful beach it is good. There are places in Cancun that are cheaper and will give you all the drink and food you want. The food is not as good, nor the drink. But the real problem is too damn many young drunken kids. Stay away!

Very fishy.

Ask yourself this, if you or I went missing, would the State Department be offering a $10 million reward? I think not.

Therefore, this tells me the guy was some sort of operative.

I have to believe that some of these Westerners detained while “hiking” in Muslim countries are spies; there is simply no other reason for them to be there without a platoon of well-armed troops.

So I guess taking my mountain bike to hilly, war-torn Yemen is right out, then.

we’ve had a great experience twice in Puerto Vallarta. An get away from the all inclusive and experience the city especially by the Malecon and the beach.

On his way to an interview with a Taliban leader. You don’t say. I don’t think that life insurance policy is going to pay out.

If you want a few days in the sun, good drink, and a beautiful beach it is good.

You can get that in Perdido Key Florida, especially the area closest to the Gulf Islands National Seashore park, at the end of Johnson Rd. Prettiest beach, beautiful water, and if you want Mexican food, there is a great restaurant just down the road!

Anyone who can travel halfway around the world to “hike” is wealthy, and I can’t believe they are unfamiliar with the travel warnings (never mind the news). These things just don’t add up...

Same time as the Obama white house named the CIA station chief over there by ‘accident.’
