Donald Trump ... a news conference for the ages
Washington Post ^ | 2/16/17 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 02/16/2017 2:03:07 PM PST by bobk333

Donald Trump entered the East Room on Thursday reeling from a week filled with resignations, withdrawals and continued questions surrounding his campaign's contacts with Russia.

What followed was an hour-long, full-throated attack on Trump's favorite foil: the media.

“Many of our nation's reporters will not tell you the truth,” Trump said.

“The press honestly is out of control,” Trump said.

“The level of dishonesty is out of control,” Trump said.

And that was before he even took a single question!

It was a return for Trump to what worked for him during the course of the 2016 campaign: A circuslike atmosphere in which he uses the media — and his supporters' distrust of the media — as a sort of tackling dummy to re-center the narrative on ground more favorable to him. Trump didn't just run down the media — although he did a lot of that — but he also mocked various outlets, reviewed shows on cable TV that he likes (and doesn't), told reporters to sit down and be quiet, and critiqued the quality of the questions he was being asked.

There was a rawness to his attacks, a personal invective that seemed well beyond the typically antagonistic relationship that exists between the media and the president they cover.

Why do it? Because Trump understands something very important: For his supporters, the media represent everything they dislike about American society. The media is composed, to their mind, of Ivy-League-educated coastal elites who look down their noses at the average person, dismissing them and their views as stupid and ill-informed. For people who feel like their voices weren't and aren't heard in politics — or culture more broadly — the media is the perfect scapegoat.

It’s not playing to his base. It’s displaying his understanding of the nature of the war with which he’s engaged.

The BEST Presser EVER!!! We could have one of these once a week...

Love this President and when he is no longer President the History Books are going to be written that he was the Best President in the History of these United States!!!

This media is on a slippery slope with the American People and with the foreign journalists...not only are they massively hurting themselves, they are hurting American People...

I will say it will take at least 30 years before we ever believe anything they say or prints anymore...

The Washington Post attempting to clear things up for it’s viewership is just hilarious.

For scapegoat, I would substitute the more accurate culprit.

Not the scapegoat. An identifiable part of the problem!

Don't believe the Lying Leftist Media. They are presumed to be lying and we should assume that what they publish is a lie. The presumption can only be rebutted with the outlet providing clear and convincing evidence they are not lying.

The presumption is WaPo's version of the Trump presser is a lie.

Typically antagonistic relationship? Could they lie a little more blatantly here? There has been NO antagonistic relationship between the media and any Democrat President in the last 50 years.

Brilliant. Like Newt on steroids, and without the apologetic backtracking.

Huh? When did the media have anything less than a worshipful relationship with Obama? They were not at all antagonistic to Jug Ears. Where were the pointed questions about Benghazi? The birth certificate? Hillary's server? To the contrary, the media worked hard to SILENCE those questions on Obama's behalf.

The press was Trumps pinata. The difference was Trump wasn’t blindfolded.

It was an EPIC presser!

It was absolutely unfriggin’ believable!

I saw this over on breitbart in the comments. I wish I could steal it and take credit for it on my own, but I’m honest and not that creative, so I cite that the most perfect movie analogy I’ve ever seen isn’t mine, but oh boy does it fit, so I repost the gist of it here.

Absolutely correct! I've been trying to decide if I had to choose just one so-called "journalist" for me to do a tap dance on their face who it would be? I guess it would come down to little Georgie Stephanopolous, clinton butt boy, or Chrissy Matthews, who gets a tingle from the kenyan 0bama.

Trump is the President this nation has desperately needed since Washington. A common sense, patriot with outstanding intellect, communication abilities and vision.

Very so often a leader comes along who so deeply loves and understands his nation ( and is loved in return) that he becomes at one with the the national psyche.
Alexander the Great, George Washington, Richard the Lionheart were all such men. Trump follows in their footsteps.

He isn’t simply a once in a generation leader. Nor even once in a century. Once in a millennium Western Civilisation is blessed with such a figure. Pray for Mr Trump- the last remaining hope of Christendom

How Chris God-awful-zilla Cizilla can write this with a straight face is beyond comprehension. The MSM spent eight years giving fawning coverage to Obama and his minions, and let out nary a whine when Obama unleashed the most un-transparent administration in history that was savage towards whistle-blowers and the occasional reporter who drifted off the reservation and actually attempted critical reporting.

We we don't hate the media for being part of the elitist pack. We hate them for their partisanship and the reprehensible tactics and bias that have only gotten worse with Trump as president. They have become parodies of themselves but no one on the left, save for a few, can see it.

The only ones I saw reeling this week was the liberal media. Keep faking your very fake news bigly!

Not even Ronald Reagan comes close to Trump's ability delivery his message.
