It was supposed to be just another evening for Ian Grillot who had walked into his favourite bar to unwind and catch the local football game.
Instead, the 24-year-old is now firmly in the spotlight after getting wounded while trying to save two Indians from gunfire.
As shots rang through the downtown Kansas City bar on Thursday, Grillot ducked behind a table and when he thought the gunman was out of bullets, he lunged at the man.
But as the Kansas City Star reported, the man had still one round left and shot Grillot through the arm and chest.
I guess I miscounted, Grillot said in a video released by the University of Kansas Health System, as reported by the newspaper.
Hours later, US prosecutors charged 51-year-old Adam Purinton with murder for an attack that some witnesses said was racially motivated. Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, died while Alok Madasani, 32, and Grillot are hospitalised and are in stable condition, police said.
Grillot said in the video that he wasnt really thinking when he tried to save the two Indians from the bullets.
It was just, it wasnt right, and I didnt want the gentleman to potentially go after somebody else, the Kansas City Star quoted him as saying.
Sounds like policeese. He was not a "gentleman," he was a killer.
It is very strange. In reports police often refer to the gentleman who just shot and killed someone. I dont get it.
He made a mistake in the bullet count but glad it wasn’t fatal. The Dirty Harry speech comes to mind of course.
A long time ago I read about reporting and how editors used to sanitize quotes and crime descriptions. One of them was to use “lady” or “gentleman” instead of the actual epithet.
I often refer to people as ladies and gentlemen when speaking to a third party about them. Just the way I am.
A person has to know his limitations.
Magnum Force but OK that fits too.
> A person has to know his limitations.
I think it was more like, “A man’s gotta know his limitations,” as flaming wreckage of his car falls down around him.
One of the most memorable and ironically funny movie scenes EVER.
I guess no one told him football season is over.
I love Clints old movies. White Hunter, Black Heart is another good one but different.
Thanks Ian. RIP Srinivas.
It was a suburban Kansas City bar.
Maybe because it was an Indian newspaper.
Nobody in their right mind would be gathering to watch a KU football game either. It was the KU basketball game.
