Since apparently there is nothing more pressing than stressing over “proper” language, administrators at Yale are pondering eliminating the term “freshman” and replacing it with non-gendered “first-year.”
“I think there comes a time when you want to make sure that the way you’re calling things reflects the values that you have,” said Dean of Student Affairs Camille Lizarríbar, who is “leading the conversation” on the issue.
The Yale Daily News reports Lizarríbar said college officials have been considering the change for some time now, adding that other Ivy League schools have already made the switch.
Yale College Dean Jonathan Holloway said that “for as long as he can remember” students and parents have expressed “frustrations” over the gender-specific nature of “freshman.”
But of course. It’s Yale.

Howevever in keeping with the spirit of the Yale hand-wringing about how to designate their Doolies and Dumbjohns, I suggest the term for grads be changed to Eloi, borrowed from author Herbert George Wells, from his novel The Time Machine.
Has anyone else notice that a lot of this craziness began as more and more woman got into position of authority?

I’m very surprised it even took this long. You could see it coming 30 years ago. Today, there would be no Mr. Softee Ice Cream, no Good Humor MAN, no MAN from Glad, no Culligan MAN, no Rocket MAN from Elton John.

Maybe not. Didn't Yale used to be all male? Going to "First Year" is kind of British and all, not so bad as a lot of the PC academic things I read here, and elsewhere.

But why limit it to the incoming freshmen?
Having opened the door to the uber-sensitive the Dean of Students should address the evils of temporal class distinctions firmly entrenched by the wicked white patriarchy.
Forced deference to a member of The Class of 2016 by incomers implies the incomers are in some fashion inferior to all previous classes and remedies should certainly be imposed. Calling one and all students Eloi erases all current distictions back to the original students. Especially the dark unstated corollary that all Yale students have devolved from their first antecedents.

Maybe they should get rid of all the books and manuscripts in the Beinecke Rare Book Library, because quite a few of them are written in cursive.
Also, essentially all of them were written by white men.
They should recycle all of them, and turn Beinecke into a homeless shelter for people of color.

What a bunch of morons! The word “freshman” is not gender-specific, since the suffix “-man” just means “person”.
‘First’ makes me think of ‘last’, and that hurts. Also, ‘Year’ makes me think of the Gregorian white people ancestors who ruined the world.
Imagine the liberal heads that would explode if they learned Spanish. They even assign gender to toothpicks.
In other news: pa_dweller is considering dropping ‘Yale administrators’ in favor of ‘mewling, subservient, PC a$$-kissers’.
Fixing New Haven would involve REAL mental work. And even worse, failure at that task would be obvious. To even “try” would risk a judgment of failure. And that would violate the bureaucrats’ First Directive: CYA.
It is SO much easier for Yale’s self-perpetuating academic grandees to display their power by whimsically changing the “definitions” of a few helpless words.
