Protecting American jobs was a signature theme of President Donald Trumps Make America Great Again campaign. A frequent target of candidate Trump was the H-1B visa program. The program, created more than 25 years ago, allows American companies to fill gaps in the workforce from overseas with highly skilled employees, who cant be found in the U.S. Many businesses use the program as intended, but we discovered more and more are taking advantage of loopholes in the law to fire American workers and replace them with younger, cheaper, temporary foreign workers with H-1B visas. But before the American workers walk out the door they often face the humiliating prospect of having to train the people taking their jobs.
Last October, Robert Harrison, a senior telecom engineer at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, was called to a meeting at the university with about 80 of his IT co-workers.
Bill Whitaker: What did they say to you?
Robert Harrison: We are sorry to inform you that as of Feb. 28, youll no longer have a job. Were going to outsource your position to this company in India.
Bill Whitaker: To a company in India.
Robert Harrison: Yes, sir.

There are hundreds of angry comments following the transcript.
Lie and lie. It does not "fill gaps" and these skills can be found in the US. Its for short sighted cheap labor, with no benefits given to the visa holder.
President Trump should stop this ASAP...................
The case shown on 60 Minutes is by no means unique. I had the same thing happen to me several years back. Greedy employers, and congressmen willing to be compliant for the right "contributions" are to blame for these abuses. The argument that H1Bs fill positions where there are no qualified Americans has never been true.
Isn’t it strange that this has gone on for the last 10-12 years, yet “60 Minutes” waits till Trump is in office to bring it up???
On a different note, my employer (who is based in India) is actually hiring more US CITIZENS because of Trump’s actions.
During the first travel ban, several people they planned to bring over from India couldn’t get visas.
I LAUGHED MY DONKEY OFF when the location turned out to be University of California San Francisco Children's Hospital, and the president of UCSF that approved the plan turned out to be JANET FREAKING NAPOLITANO!
We can restore the import tariffs on goods and bring back manufacturing.
I'm not sure how we stop the offshoring of tech labor and services.
President Trump should stop this ASAP...................Yes! But the Media will say its all his fault, and he was one of the major employers of undocumented workers. Leave it to the media to have piles of $#it ready to throw from the back of the fan.
Trump needs to put and end to this. That interview with Rajesh is a good one.
Isn’t it funny that we need the law to “fill gaps” where there are no Americans to do the job but they have to fire Americans to bring in the foreigners.
What H1 and related are really about is making sure the IT people don’t rise to executive level in the business. Executives correctly assume that the docile Indian workers won’t challenge them the way native Americans do. Software developers are more intelligent than the average business director and will eventually take over executive leadership in many corps, the way marketing and financial guys did generations ago. The children of the Indian workers who are taking our jobs for half the pay, or less, won’t be so docile. So, we will have second generation Americans running things. At least the traditional business school people will finally be demoted.
LYAN RYAN is part of the GOpe that want this to continue..................
I used to be very afraid of outsourcing
But since then I’ve made a very lucrative career fixing software they tried to write.
The brain drain is long since over...
They seem to be giving away college degrees with 3 cereal box tops these days.
Some good discussion in the comments.
All of Trump’s “immigrant” workers were NOT of the “undocumented” (illegal) sort.
One of my friends was a manager in IT (COBOL shop) back in the 90’s and he said to me one day: I was watching a row of contractors working, and I saw the Americans, who are billed at $75 an hour, working next to Indians, who are billed at $17 an hour, both doing the same jobs with the same quality, except the Indians will work through lunch and are otherwise more “dedicated”. So why am I hiring American contractors?
His company went on to become one of the first large scale users of Indian IT workers. He even gave convention speeches on the do-s and dont’s of outsourcing labor.
I’m just really glad I’m past retirements age. I’m not retired, but I could technically do it at any time.
Considering that every dinky college and university in the country generates 30+ IT graduates every year, explain to me why they can't find them? Better yet, why don't you allow qualified, unemployed IT workers to sue a company that is using H1B workers for positions the unemployed IT worker is qualified. That would dry up the H1B program, pretty quickly.
that's exactly correct.
Want to hear something sick? The US government has been at times sending US citizens data to India in some of their efforts. I work here, seen it personally. Also, get this, US has used companies to take federal jobs - and give them to H1-b's. Again, I live and have seen it done at GSA, Federal Reserve, and other agencies.
The reason the HB-1 program had to be invented was that America has been aborting over 1 million babies per year.
