Sen. Robert Menendez ongoing corruption case could upend the New Jersey Democrat’s reelection bid in 2018, with the longtime politician scheduled to go to court this fall.

The Supreme Court delivered another blow this week to the embattled senator when it refused to dismiss the case. The trial is scheduled to begin about a year before the midterm elections.

Federal prosecutors charged Menendez, who has pleaded not guilty, in April 2015 on 14 criminal counts, including conspiracy to commit bribery.

Menendez is expected to head to trial on Sept. 6,facing a potential criminal conviction even as he would normally be preparing a re-election bid.

A trial will ensure his re-election. This is New Jersey neck and neck with Illinois for the most corrupted politics in the country.

The first sentence of this story tells you all you need to know about politics in New Jersey. His indictment might affect his reelection.

We need to wait for November’s Election for Governor and legislature and see where the GOP stands then... The filing date for June 2018 primary is next April.

Menendez is probably guilty as hell. The odd thing is he is one of the most honorably democrats in the Senate. He is totally corrupt but is a patriot. We live in strange times!

And if he wants to win in a landslide he just has to start picking up male sex partners in rest areas on the New Jersey Turnpike.

If it looks like he’ll lose, they’ll just violate the law again and replace him with some other dem at the last instant like they did with Torricelli and the NJ Supreme Court will say that in this case, the law doesn’t have to be followed because electing democrats is more important than rule of law, as they also did with Torricelli. Same as it ever was in the Garden State.

This is Jersey we are talking about right? Mendez will get primaries by Steve Fulop the mayor of Jersey City who will beat anybody the Republicans have in the whole state.

The NJ GOP bench is wide open. Anyone can run, but the party bosses may want to choose someone who is preferable.

Former Jersey City mayor Bret Schundler would be a good 2018 Senate candidate.

my question, what happened to quick justice? Why does it take so long to prosecute and convict?

Any upstanding political party would immediately reject a candidate up to his eyeballs in corruption charges but this is the Democrats we’re talking about here.
