Agreed. Russia doesn’t want to lose what it has gained in the ME but we can’t trust Russia two inches. They are too thick with Iran who is the real dirty party in the mix. Trump’s message was really meant for Iran as much as Russia. ....as well as for NK. Russia has been warned. They had better choose wisely.

Of course we can’t trust Russia but Trump can certainly leverage their self-interests in order to satisfy our self-interests. We would want certain things from a new Syrian leader and so would Russia. I should think both would want one who supports defeating ISIS.
We don’t know, you or me, what the source of the intelligence report is, CIA, or whatever, upon which Mathis is relying.

I don’t know what Iran will do but I think they will get the short end of the stick when Trump and Putin come to some arrangement. When it comes down to it Trump can offer Russia more and he can take away more.

I think they think he, Trump will go - in Syria - farther than I think he will.
My recommendation is to continue to fight ISIS and ally with the Kurds in northern Syria, but let Russia continue to own the situation in Damascus. It is not that I “trust” Putin. But I think he will be against all the Islamist groups that want to take Damascus, including those claiming to be merely “opposed to Assad”.
We’ll have to wait and see if there are any more chemical attacks, and if there are the “intelligence” may be less ambiguous.
