What Chicago really needs (45 shootings over Easter weekend)
New York Post ^ | 4/17/2017 | Post Editorial Board

Easter weekend was Chicago’s bloodiest since New Year’s, with 45 shootings, at least two of them fatal — a bad sign heading into the warmer months.

The Windy City’s only consolation is that it’s doing better than last year: 915 shootings so far, vs. 955 in the same period in 2016. Homicides are also down, from 171 to 166.

But the numbers are still higher than New York’s, though Chicago has about one-third the Big Apple’s population.

And the NYPD continues to bring its own crime stats down, year after year — progress it’s continued to deliver (with occasional setbacks) ever since 1993, when then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton fundamentally changed the city’s course with the shift to community policing strategies and CompStat accountability for managers.

Chicago’s leaders keep talking a good game: “We cannot afford to lose another generation to the gangs and to the streets and to the guns and to the violence,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel last year as he announced a three-part plan to combat crime. Maybe his voters are happy with those slightly lower numbers . . .

After two decades-plus of rising safety, New Yorkers approve of the NYPD’s results so strongly that even uber-progressive Mayor de Blasio hasn’t tried to turn back the clock. Maybe Chicago needs to elect a Rudy-style Republican to really turn the tide.

The MSM says nothing about the deafening silence of Barack and Michelle, re: Chicago shootings/violence. And most all the people in victimized areas love and support them. Don't have a criticism about either one. Lotsa luck seeing "a Rudy-style Republican" ever elected there. Liberalism and it's fruits are a mental disorder.

Now that Obama has retired and moved back to his home town things will surely get better soon, won't they?

That will happen next time Chicago is under a mile thick ice sheet.

915 shootings so far, vs. 955

Eventually they'll run out of people to shoot.........Maybe the last two standing will call a truce.

ABP is a TV show where a billionaire spends 90 million dollars to upgrade one district in Chicago with modern gadgets.

My comment is for that much money he could buy a gun for every non-criminal in Chicago along with shooting ranges and training classes. Problem solved.

What Chicago needs is there very own Che Guavera to unite those guns against the white privileged controlled city, state and federal governments./S

Obama pretty much is prepared to lead this effort through his community hope and change organization funded by Soros and others.

What Chicago needs is a dozen versions of Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr..

95 shootings. 2 kills. what they need is marksmanship training, and this problem would take care of itself in a month.

Lets call it what it is. This is gang warfare. In Chicago, many of the killings over the last few years have been hits. Its no more random robberies. Its gangs wielding their power. Mostly its in two black communities, on the west and south sides.

If the city and the communities wanted to get rid of it, it would happen. The reality is that the gangs have infiltrated. They are in the politics. They are in the local businesses. They are in the neighborhoods. They are in the schools.

Yes there is the heartache of the baby who’s life ends as a result of a stray bullet, or the promising teenager gunned down before they can escape the “hood”. But these have gotten too common. Every weekend we get a fist full of shootings. And every month there is at least one child being gunned down.

The politicians say its poverty, its guns, its education, its lack of jobs. But the reality is, that we have all those issues in other places. And we don’t have problems like these. Gangs and drugs are the issue. All the rest is corollary or responsive.
