This Do-Nothing Congress Is A Travesty
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 4/20/2017 | Staff

Agenda: Shortly after Donald Trump won the election, House Speaker Paul Ryan said that Republicans had to "go big, go bold, and do things." So far, the GOP has not delivered.

"They have the House, they have the Senate, they have the presidency — and nothing's happening," lamented PJ Media co-founder Roger Simon earlier this week. "Nothing, that is, that Donald Trump doesn't do by himself. ... The Republicans in the legislature are a disgrace."

Congress did pass, and Trump signed, 13 bills to undo last-minute Obama administration regulations. And the Senate approved Trump's Supreme Court pick. But what about actually advancing long-awaited Republican legislative priorities, like ObamaCare repeal and tax cuts? Nada.

Ryan claims that he's working on yet another version of an ObamaCare repeal and replace bill — after the first attempt blew up — in hopes that he can get a vote on it before Trump hits his 100-day mark. But even if the bill wins approval in the House, nobody knows what the Senate will do, or when.

Now tax reform is slipping off the table, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin saying that getting reform done by August is "highly aggressive to not realistic."

These delays could easily have been avoided. ObamaCare repeal and tax reform had been on the Republican agenda for years, and Ryan had already hammered out detailed "Better Way" proposals for both last summer. There was every reason to think that Republicans would have, in the words of Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds, bills "lined up like airplanes on a runway ready to take off in the new year."

Trump is playing nice with the establishment fools, while they do everything in their power to destroy Trump’s honeymoon period and limit him to 4 years in office.

Ryan and the turtle should have been removed as the first order of business!

I take exception to the notion that Ryan is leading the charge to destroy Trump. That is doing something. It is a positive action.

This is the roll over and do nothing party. Govern? We're getting our cut. Why would we want to do that?

“Trump needs to get on prime time tv and announce I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone”

That’s not his style, so it would sound more like this:

Trump: I’ve got the most beautiful pen in the world, and I’ve also got the very best phone, it’s unbelievable, you have never seen a phone like this.

To me, "tax reform" means to rip out the internal revenue code and go with the lowest, flatest tax possible. Repealing the 16th Amendment would be my ultimate goal, but it isn't ever going to happen. So going lowest, flatest is the next best thing.

To me, "repeal" means just that, and "replace" means just that. They don't have to be done together, but congress sets up these artificial barriers such as "repeal and replace" at the same time, just so they have an excuse to not deliver on anything.

To me, every bill coming out of congress should be written in clear, plain language and be no more than about 50 pages, and only if necessary. But that would mean congress critters couldn't hide all the bull crap they stuff legislation with as payoffs to themselves, their families and supporters. Disgusting people. Every last one of them.

The medical bills for the butt sores while playing video games must take up a significant amount of the medical budget.

The best thing about Trump is that he’s not a politician. Unfortunately, that has its disadvantages when it comes to managing expectations in a legislative process.

Trump hasn't been the only one making those kinds of promises. Pence has made them. Price has made them. Ryan has made them. And every one of those will come back to haunt them if the solution they push through falls short. And there is literally is no way that it won't.

You my friend have “nailed it”. ANY bill before congress should only be about a single issue and none of the “add-on” clauses.

Having spent 20 years as an elected County Official, in all those years NEVER, EVER saw or signed a single bill (Resolution) the had a single add-on, it just wasn’t allowed, period. How the crooks in congress can get away with what they do amazes me.

A reasonable assessment you make, thank you. The focus on this forum seems to be all about those bad republicans. The RAT party seems to escape notice.

POTUS, Donald J. Trump...we, the American people love you...but, I can assure you. Mr. President, House Speaker Paul Ryan hates you!!! Get rid of him...immediately and then have Congress declare there will be no more recess breaks until, Obamacare is repealed and replaced, Tax cuts for business and individuals is passed and signed, and the “Infastructure” plan is passed and signed!!!

The very fact and insult that Paul Ryan did not cancel the “Spring” recess is an insult to you sir, and the entire American people. Congress should be working seven days a week until they get the work of the American people done!!!Broom that low life piece of human vermin, Paul Ryan, like right now!!!

Anything that was passed reflexively in the immediate aftermath of a real or fabricated crisis should be dropped from the list. Most of those turn out to be disastrous in the long run, anyway (see TARP and the PATRIOT Act, for example) ... which is exactly why you don’t want Congress rushing into something without a lot of thought and deliberation.

More and more I'm coming to the conclusion that Paul Ryan might be the biggest phony I've ever seen in my entire life.

I thought that John Boehner was pretty bad (and he mostly was), but to my amazement this guy is far worse.

The voters ousted the Democrats from power because they were not representing the people. They can just as easily do the Republicans the same way. They were elected to deliver not to undermine Trump.
