A massive power outage in San Francisco caused a blackout Friday morning in neighborhoods across the city, from the Financial District to the Presidio, forcing the closure of businesses, a BART station, cable car service and a federal courthouse, officials said. A spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said 95,000 customers lost power and that there had been a fire at a substation at Larkin and Eddy streets. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the fire caused the outage, which swept through the city shortly after 9 a.m., or was ignited as a result of the outage. As of 11 a.m., PG&E officials could not provide an estimate for when service would return.

The San Francisco Fire Department was responding to numerous calls for service, including people stuck in elevators, but reported no immediate injuries. Everywhere, sirens blared as engines maneuvered along jammed streets. Traffic lights were out in scores of intersections, and traffic was backing up on downtown streets as drivers grew frustrated and honked at each other. BART’s Montgomery Station was closed due to the outage, and trains were running through the station without stopping. All cable cars were down, as were several Muni bus lines that typically run on electricity from overhead wires, including the 30, 45, 22, and 24. Shuttles were put in place to provide service, according to the Municipal Transportation Agency.

Power outages and people at lights yelling at each other about who has the right of way, causing chaos. It makes a bit of a case for roundabouts. Power outages wouldn’t affect traffic near as much. Just a random thought.

Subtle message from the Chinese suggesting that they will handle Norks for us but don’t think we’re best buds.

Get used to it California.

When the environmental left’s dream of everyone being forced to rely on wind and sun for energy is finally realized, this will be a daily occurrence.

“Where were you when the lights went out?”

Under the Boardwalk!

In the park you hear the happy sound of a carousel
Mm-mm, you can almost taste the hot dogs and french fries they sell
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where I’ll be

(Under the boardwalk) out of the sun
(Under the boardwalk) we’ll be havin’ some fun
(Under the boardwalk) people walking above
(Under the boardwalk) we’ll be falling in love
Under the boardwalk, boardwalk

The Drifters - Under The Boardwalk
