It’s Time to Pull the Plug on August Recess
Townhall.com ^ | June 28, 2017 | Senator David Perdue

Posted on 06/28/2017 10:22:28 AM PDT by Kaslin

The United States Senate has just 35 working days until the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, and that’s assuming Mondays and Fridays are indeed used for deliberation.

One thing is totally clear: There isn’t time to deal with the issues that demand immediate attention.

The only appropriate response is to cancel, or heavily truncate, the annual August recess that turns the United States Capitol into a ghost town.

Last year, voters handed Republicans a Senate majority, a House majority, and the White House. They gave us a probationary period to turn the conservative policies we champion into actual results.

The expectations are high and we’ve made some progress. We’ve confirmed Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and we’ve taken on the boldest rollback of federal regulations since President Ronald Reagan was in office.

We’ve gotten President Donald Trump’s Cabinet in place and made some headway on health care, but all of this consumed the first half of the year.

The American people are expecting us to get much more done. Five imperatives must be accomplished in short order.

First, we have to complete the work on the first phase of repealing Obamacare and fixing our health care system.

Second, we have to pass a budget resolution that will work within the reconciliation process for changing the tax code.

Third, we have to use the appropriations process to fund the federal government by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

Theoretically, these recesses were to be used by our noble elected representatives to go home and touch base with their constituents again. However, most of them probably head straight for a vacation somewhere and are never seen again until they absolutely have to return.

Washington, DC is fully air-conditioned. Let them stay and get back to work.

If I was President Trump I would go further than that. I would wait until all you jerks got home to your districts and on Sunday July 1 I would call an emergency session of Congress and the Senate to ‘finish the work the American People have paid you to do!’ and announce nonstop sessions until Obamacare is repealed, tax cuts are implemented and a new budget is finally passes through normal order in the House and Senate. If it takes until Christmas, So be it. After all Christmas Eve is when this abomination of Obamacare was actually passed.

The president can MAKE the legislature open sessions and keep them there as long as he sees fit. He should do so. He would win reelection by twenty points if he did so.

They are lazy slackers - daring to chew out working-class people for not doing work that Mexicans will do! They all live in beautiful suburban homes or beautiful suburban homes in their home state. But, no, they and their lazy staffs act like it’s 1861 and it’s HOT in Washington and they must retreat to their stately mansions to order the slaves around. Phooey on that!

No thanks. Spend what little time you’re in session getting done what the majority of voters in November 2016 wanted done. Don’t do any more than that, don’t be in session any longer than it takes to do all that. Most of the time a legislative body is better off-or at least we are better off when they are-out of session.

I disagree with Perdue. The GOP hasn’t failed to pass more important bills because they aren’t working enough days. They have failed to pass them because they just don’t have the votes. Send them home to meet with their constituents will be better than anything they can get done in Washington.

Most full-time working class Americans can only dream of such a work schedule.

lol. McConnell and Ryan and Boenher before him are the worst when working days during the year. Heck even Pelosi and Reid made the Congress people work more days. Republicans have had the worst leaders, in Congress in history, the last 20 years.

There’s no need for them to go home. The people they represent are right there in D.C. on K Street.

If their health care plan is any indication on how they will solve the other priorities then we’d be better off extending the August recess and not reducing it.
