Charles F. Carey, Jr. Info from here. |
|
Charles F. Carey, Jr. (died January 9, 1945) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II. Carey joined the Army from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and by January 8, 1945 was serving as a technical sergeant in the 397th Infantry Regiment 100th Infantry Division. During a German attack on that day and the following day, in Rimling, France, he organized and led a series of patrols against the enemy forces. With his patrols, he rescued American soldiers who had been attacked or surrounded, captured a house and sixteen prisoners, and disabled an enemy tank. He was killed by a sniper later in the day on January 9. For these actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor six months later in July 1945.
Carey was buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupré, Belgium. |
Technical Sergeant Carey's official Medal of Honor citation reads: He was in command of an antitank platoon when about 200 enemy infantrymen and 12 tanks attacked his battalion, overrunning part of its position. After losing his guns, T/Sgt. Carey, acting entirely on his own initiative, organized a patrol and rescued 2 of his squads from a threatened sector, evacuating those who had been wounded. He organized a second patrol and advanced against an enemy-held house from which vicious fire issued, preventing the free movement of our troops. Covered by fire from his patrol, he approached the house, killed 2 snipers with his rifle, and threw a grenade in the door. He entered alone and a few minutes later emerged with 16 prisoners. Acting on information he furnished, the American forces were able to capture an additional 41 Germans in adjacent houses. He assembled another patrol, and, under covering fire, moved to within a few yards of an enemy tank and damaged it with a rocket. As the crew attempted to leave their burning vehicle, he calmly shot them with his rifle, killing 3 and wounding a fourth. Early in the morning of January 9, German infantry moved into the western part of the town and encircled a house in which T/Sgt. Carey had previously posted a squad. Four of the group escaped to the attic. By maneuvering an old staircase against the building, T/Sgt. Carey was able to rescue these men. Later that day, when attempting to reach an outpost, he was struck down by sniper fire. The fearless and aggressive leadership of T/Sgt. Carey, his courage in the face of heavy fire from superior enemy forces, provided an inspiring example for his comrades and materially helped his battalion to withstand the German onslaught.

Destroying the Divides
July 3, 2017
I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
Joshua 7:12
A writing deadline loomed over me, while the argument I had with my husband earlier that morning swirled through my mind. I stared at the blinking cursor, fingertips resting on the keyboard. He was wrong too, Lord.
When the computer screen went black, my reflection scowled. My unacknowledged wrongs were doing more than hindering the work before me. They were straining my relationship with my husband and my God.
I grabbed my cell phone, swallowed my pride, and asked for forgiveness. Savoring the peace of reconciliation when my spouse apologized as well, I thanked God and finished my article on time.
The Israelites experienced the pain of personal sin and joy of restoration. Joshua warned Gods people not to enrich themselves in the battle for Jericho (Josh. 6:18), but Achan stole captured items and hid them in his tent (7:1). Only after his sin was exposed and dealt with (vv. 412) did the nation enjoy reconciliation with their God.
Like Achan, we dont always consider how tucking sin into our tents turns our hearts from God and impacts those around us. Acknowledging Jesus as Lord, admitting our sin, and seeking forgiveness provides the foundation for healthy and faithful relationships with God and others. By submitting to our loving Creator and Sustainer daily, we can serve Him and enjoy His presencetogether.
Lord, please help us recognize, confess, and turn away from our sin, so that we can nurture loving relationships with You and others.
God can purge our hearts of the sin that destroys our intimacy with Him and others.

Ooooooh MAN! Sorry to hear it. Not going to be pleasant for getting out about for anything during the day time. It's going to be a week for becoming a night owl and shopping in the middle of the night. :-)
Not much going on here. Just stayed inside all day because it was so hot and muggy. Even Hubby stayed inside today rather than go out to the garage. A brief shower cooled things off a little late this afternoon. Going to be like this all week.
Little furry angels ? Surely you jest! LOL!
Been a pretty quiet day in here for a change. Even the lil hellions have been relatively calm. Of course, that could change at any moment!

We used to go to a huge party some friends held every year but their house burned to the ground early last year. Rather than rebuild, they chose to move to FL, so no more huge bashes. They were fun because everyone bought fireworks to take along and we’d have a BIG show at dark.
I thought about buying a few fireworks this year to shoot off at the farm but decided to use that money to get another Nikon camera to replace the one a cat broke a month or so ago. Just got it yesterday. I’ll put it to really good use in August during the solar eclipse. We’ll be in the path for totality for that one.
I checked the local newspapers to see if there was anything going on in the two towns closest to us for the 4th. No parades but the town north of us will have their big bash tomorrow. I’ll go to at least see the fireworks whether Hubby chooses to go or not.
The town south of us had their fireworks show last night and I could see most of it from the hill across the road. Saw other fireworks around the county, too, as a lot of parties were going on. A few people are shooting off fireworks tonight and I’ve been outside watching them.
