Reviews of Thursdays op-ed werent much better, with Slate calling it asinine, for example. A noted a HuffPost headline read, Its 2017. Democrats Should Really Just Stop Taking Mark Penns Advice.
Dan Pfeiffer, a former top Obama aide, told me, There can and should be a robust debate in the party about where we go in the post-Obama era. I dont pretend to know the right path forward, but I know it isnt a poll-driven, corporatist path.
Twitter users werent much kinder:

Now RATS want to embrace the deplorables? It maybe too late for all that. Give us another dose of Mad Max, please!
Rats shoukd move to Venezuela to see the outcome of their policy wishes.
They cannot do so unless they repudiate the hard left.
Throwing the hard left under the bus will not give the demodogs a net gain in votes.
No! They’d be selling out! Democrats need to reject those sell-out DINO’s and stick to progressive principals! Don’t let the phobes win.
Well, if they did they would be to the right of most Republicans nowadays.!
The Democrat Party has become dominated by the bomb throwing, frothing at the mouth, hard Left and they are incapable of distancing themselves from it because it’s who they are now.
A pig w/lipstick is still just a pig no matter what!!!!!!!!!!

The task of the Democrats is to drag the center relentlessly leftward. They’ve been at it successfully for many decades. Their only mistake recently was to push too hard, too fast.
SHOULD DEMOCRATS MOVE TO THE CENTER? MARK PENN OP-ED INSPIRES FURIOUS DEBATE
SHOULD DEMOCRATS PRETEND TO MOVE TO THE CENTER?
Fixed it!
And you know they will. Rahm Emmanuel helped the Dems do just that in the 2006 election when they took back the House and Senate.
The Dems need to go further left.
“The Dems need to go further left.”
Definitely. And keep Pelosi as Grand Poobah as long as possible. Even if she strokes out and/or goes home to be with Satan, go full Weekend At Bernie’s and keep her front and center. We need her.
Like the myth of Mohammedism and “moderate” Mohammedism.
Those are YOUR values, not OURS. Wake the f... up!
[Addressed to the Dims, not to the poster.]
Instead of moving to the “center”, how about Kenya or Somalia, anywhere but here.
——Throwing the hard left under the bus will not give the demodogs a net gain in votes.——
You are correct
There are far too many hard left to fit under the bus and there may be an awful lot of not so far left that absolutely won’t fit under the bus.
If they fail to move to the center, they will likely never win back the Midwest or the 'rust belt' states.
I fully expect the dems to double down and nominate a Corey Booker or Kamala Harris type to energize their black and leftist base, thereby relegating them to coastal party status.
The democrat party of JFK is long gone. That has become abundantly clear many times in the past few years. During the primaries in 2016, when Jim Webb committed the mortal sin of saying that "all lives matter" when asked about blm, the media and the democrat base excoriated him.
As much as the democrats hate the white working class; that is still the majority in the US.(at least until they flood us with as much of the 3rd world as possible)
They can say they’re moving to the center. They’ll be lying.
They’ll campaign as centrists as they often do and then return to their far-Left positions after taking their seats, same as they always do.
Democrat strategy is “how can we fool them this time?”
No, they need to move further to the left. They need to embrace their Communism.
What exactly is "the center?" They are such radical far left extremists that any phony moderating of their stances on a whole host of issues would barely bring them back into the human race.
