Police were on a city-wide tactical alert Friday after a power outage at one of the Los Angeles Police Department’s two dispatch centers.

The outage was reported about 11:20 a.m. at the LAPD’s downtown dispatch center, according to a department spokesman.

All communications operations were shifted to the department’s other dispatch center at the Valley Bureau and no disruptions were reported, said Officer Sal Ramirez.

Yeah, let’s tear down all the dams, then close all the nuclear power plants.

Sounds real smart.

Manufacturers of Diesel and gas-powered gensets love it.

Stock price of both Cummins-Onan and Caterpillar have doubled in the last 18 months.

It seemed like CAT was in trouble a year or two back stock-wise.

Good for them.

I’m looking to get a portable generator for a building that I periodically use that has no power. Long story.

Harbor Freight ones are tempting but I’m not that trusting of those models. Some of their hand tools have done rather well by me. Stuff with moving parts I’m a tad wary of.

Probably Lowes, Northern or Homeless Depot for that.

Police were on a city-wide tactical alert Friday after a power outage at one of the Los Angeles Police Department’s two dispatch centers.

Not supposed to happen, as they should have a backup generator. I was involved in the build of San Francisco's new dispatch center. Backup generators are tested constantly, as are supplies of fuel, and they kick in immediately if outside power sources are interrupted. Was also involved in a build of a data center for the SF Health department, where outside contractors were responsible for the power setup. That data center went live for about a month when there was a power outage, and the generator failed after five minutes. Oops, the contractors failed to fuel the generator. Rules were put in place to have operators check supplies monthly and do backup generator testing.

My flipping home generator tests itself every week at a certain time for twenty minutes, an alarm goes off if it is down or my guy is notified via cell phone.

Power went out here in Ocean County NJ for awhile this morning. No joke in these parts. West of me is McGuire AFB/ Ft. Dix and further south is Lakehurst Naval Air Station and north of me about twenty minutes is Earl Naval Weapons Station.

Dispatch should be on a UPS with AC mains that transfer to a diesel genset within a few minutes. A 3 to 5 day fuel supply should be present with a plan to refill from an outside source for an extended outage.

During my stint at the PacBell Trade St data center in San Diego, we had an SDG&E outage in nearby Mira Mesa. The co-gen plant onsite was supposed to let go of SDG&E and keep the data center up. The device didn't let go and the co-gen plant was trying to hold up all of Mira Mesa. That worked for a few minutes before the gear boxes failed on the natural gas turbines. The diesels fired up to cover the gas turbine loss. Meanwhile, inside, we were madly racing around performing disciplined shutdowns of very large mainframes as the UPS batteries only have 30 minutes capacity to hold while the co-gen facility switches "mains" supplies. It took weeks to repair the damage.

Good grief!!! No excuse for them to not have a Backup Gen. Heck the Water Plants I worked at had Autostart and Switch Over. We were required to test the System every month, once for Nightshift and once for Dayshift. We basically did it twice a month as We staggered the tests.

Yes to a degree it’s the NIMBYs’’ but it is also a question of an aging power grid/infrastructure and rapid, virtually unchecked development that is straining the existing system. I live in New Jersey sorry to say. Here the political power structure is really just a professional criminal class only interested in levying and collecting tax revenue and staying in power.
