ELKHART _ Two people are confirmed dead in an hit and run accident on Beardsley Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday.
According to a press release issued late last Saturday by Elkhart Police Department Communications officer Chris Snyder, Ekhart police and fire department were dispatched to the area of East Beardsley Avenue and Cassopolis Street in regards to a motor vehicle crash.
Police and fire arrived to find several victims in the roadway and on the sidewalk.
At this time it appears the suspect vehicle was traveling east on Beardsley Avenue when it left the south side of the road striking five subjects, according to the press release. The suspect vehicle continued east on Beardsley Avenue where it stuck two vehicles that were traveling west on Beardsley Avenue. The suspect vehicle continued east on Beardsley Avenue, fleeing from the scene.
Regarding the victims that were walking: one victim died at the scene, one victim died at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, one victim was transported to Riley Children Hospital with life threatening injuries, one victim is being treated at Memorial Hospital of South Bend with serious injuries and one victim is being treated at Elkhart General Hospital, also with serious injuries.
Regarding the victims in the vehicles that were struck, none of these people reported serious injuries.
Snyder said that as of late Saturday evening, there was no description of suspect vehicle or the driver of that vehicle.
"At this time we do not know if this was an intentional act or if drugs or alcohol were involved," Snyder said.

Wow. Very sad. Was just down that way and there was no indication of a crime scene. It is more of an older, historic district, though, and not somewhere I would be walking at night. Prayers for all the victims.

Hitting the two vehicles going the opposite direction makes little sense if the person was sober.

An 8 month old baby has also been confirmed dead. Three victims, the car couldn’t have gotten far but someone should definitely have followed it.
My mother had driven by there 15 minutes before it happened. She told there is a hall there that they rent out for receptions parties etc.
I had not heard the baby died. From what I hear Elkhart is going to $hit, much like South Bend and Indianapolis has. To be fair, there is a lot of meth up there. Meth, the white mans crack.
