Glenn Beck's The Blaze is enforcing 20% layoffs on its staff, a major sign of distress, all the more curious because the election of Donald Trump pretty well showed how significant the potential reader base out there might be. After all, most conservative websites are either doing well, or holding their own in the current tough media environment. Breitbart doesn't seem to have any trouble hiring new people, as the re-entry of Steve Bannon and maybe Sebastian Gorka can testify. Breitbart has also been expanding its overseas operations. The Wall Street Journal editorial page has been hiring, the Daily Caller seems to be picking up new talent.
So, what did Beck in? I can only speak for myself as a reader, but if you ask me, it was Beck himself. The guy just couldn't keep a steady editorial line. He puffed and pontificated, taking himself from tea party stalwart to the guy who was always complaining about conservatives, the very thing that did Jeb Bush in. Not to mention, he bawled a lot. But style points aside, his big problem was that in an era of Trump, he didn't like Trump. And it wasn't because he was a swamper, which has a certain logic, it was because he invented himself some biblical apocalyptic vision and cooked up a rationalization from it that Trump was a bad guy. Or something.

I hadn’t listened regularly to Beck in years before 2016 - the trio of Beck, Stu & Pat got annoying for one thing. He also just wasn’t talking about anything I was interested in, but if the radio in the car was on his station & his show was on, I usually tolerated it & didn’t turn the channel. Once he started in on Trump, that was the coup de grâce as far as listening to him at all - radio went off or station was changed.
The death watch is on for Beck’s empire.
Maybe he can hand out Teddy Bears at the border.
Or open a Taco stand.
Icarus Syndrome. If he stuck to investigative and explanatory journalism (e.g., his pieces on Fabian Socialism, etc.), he’d be raking in the loot. Nobody else with a major audience was doing that and he did it pretty well. But that’s a niche media product, and it has to fit into a larger platform. Beck ditched Fox and tried to set up his own platform.
Being a control freak, a conspiracist, a contrarian, a hypochondriac, an alcoholic with ADHD and a member of a numerically small religious group doesn’t suggest someone capable of reading the tea leaves and producing content that will attract a broad audience— large enough to produce sustained advertising dollars.
In short, the boy blew himself up.
It is amazing how Trump has altered the media landscape. Look at Fox, it looks like Houston! Glenn Beck, frankly one I admired early in the Obama Admin...someone pointing out what was wrong, now mentally “gone.” My biggest life change in this is not listening to the Levin podcast while I walk my dog. I don’t have cable any more, I don’t enjoy watching the NFL, I don’t even go to the movies, they are filled with things I personally dislike and are not entertaining. And I’m not a “political reactionary”... just a quiet, (fairly) normal person. When you stop and look around and compare “now” with “then” in the news media....Trump has changed it forever. I bet it has changed for you too.

I axed my subscription to Rush's 24/7 for his anti-Trump, pro-Cruz/Rubio during the primaries. I just recently started listening to Rush again. He's better, but still calls us "you Trumpster's out there", like he isn't aboard the Trump train.
Your comment made me think of erikson..he sounded gleeful that mueller has that libtard ny ag that is gonna nail trump jr. Etc with,state charges to stop a trump pardon.
I think Glenn got into financial trouble and took in investors that required him to go after Trump. At least, that’s the only think that makes any sense to me. Its not that Trump is above criticism, its that Glenn’s criticisms made no sense.
I was done with him when he called Sarah Palin a clown.
IMO Beck was becoming unhinged long before NT.
I try, I really do try, to listen to Hannity, but normally shut him off fairly quickly. His repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat and repeat again, have a guest on, ask a question, and interrupt the guest in a nano second after asking the question, only to repeat, repeat, repeat and repeat again! He agitates me!
Back in the early 80's, I was working 2nd shift in the Shenandoah Valley(Harrisonburg). I didn't have cable, so when I got home, Dr. Scott was always there... His view on the pyramids and other ancient structures was almost educational, and the live gospel music was always entertaining. The big easy chairs and "I really know what I'm talking attitude", with bearded, thinking man's face... has served me well as a warning of "probably doesn't really know what he's talking about". Glen really has all that going on these days...but no entertainment, no horses, no hot wife.

Yes, he went Never Trump and lost his listeners. We stopped listening when he went that route.
