Shelly Berman did a pretty good turn in the 1964 movie version of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" as the wormy little guy whom the hero liberal (Henry Fonda of course) reluctantly drags forward to sink the nasty conservative candidate (of course) Cliff Robertson - Berman served with Robertson in the Army and thinks he was part of a homosexual ring, but actually Robertson was working undercover so to speak to expose the ring to the authorities - Berman beats a quick obsequious retreat.....

Probably did a lot of that “did you ever notice?” observational kind of humor. Strikes me a lot of comedians are doing that now.

made an ass of himself I'm not Paul Harvey but there is the rest of the story.
Long ago television shows where transmitted live. Shelly Berman was doing a live show and during a very touching telephone conversation with his father another phone backstage rang totally destroying the moment.
Shelly Berman did become enraged. As a result he never signed a release and never accepted payment. That is why no one who didn't see it live will ever see it.
