Fake News: CBS Asks “How Heavily Armed is Your State?”

Short Barreled Shotgun

This fake news report keeps on circulating. It is time to debunk the ignorant and misleading story. This “article” appears to have been published by CBS in 2014. The implication of the story is that it tells something about how many firearms are in each state.

As with much fake news, the most important part is the headline.  In this case, it is a question: “How heavily armed is your state?” CBS gives the methodology. It is laughable to the point of being bizarre. To the ignorant, the methodology may seem plausible.

To those with knowledge of the subject, it is insane. From cbsnews.com: “How heavily armed is your state?

Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census. While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

In the United States there are about 400,000,000 privately owned firearms. The numbers on the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, (from 2013, as used in the NBC article) show a total of 3,510,980 “firearms”. That is less than 1 percent of the total firearms in the nation.

The headline and the article are completely misleading.

It just keeps circulating. Fake News.

🚤. A rash of boating mishaps has left us defenseless. Maybe the Brits can send us some arms.

I don’t know.

“How heavily armed is your state?”

I think the proper response would be: “Not Enough!”

As cool as it looks it would hurt to shoot that.

I’d say Illinois and specifically Chicago is very well armed. After all it is pretty much war on the streets there with several people shot every week. But that is beside the point... or is it?

IIRC the article, while describing the NFA category, fails to note that many states outright ban some or all of the items included. NY won’t show much ownership precisely because most NFA guns are prohibited there (though I’ll note registering a 12ga AOW pistol there is a hoot), though hunting guns (not included in NFA) are quite common.

Kinda like the circular reasoning that machineguns shouldn’t be allowed because they’re not common, but they’re not common because they’re not allowed.

I have something very similar (basically the 14” version).
Yes, it hurts to shoot it.
But it hurts so _good_.
The grin doesn’t go away for hours.

How many or how powerful? Guess they don’t know the difference between few and less.

North Dakota. The sheer quantity of shotguns and hunting rifles throws the earth’s gravity slightly off balance here.

In related news made 5# batch of goose sausage last weekend, gave it a 1 hour kiss in the smoker. Kids and neighbors completely destroyed it by Monday.

Yes. I would venture to guess Chicago and Vermont.

Vermont is very leftist, but Vermonters also love guns, and our gun laws are extremely liberal (meaning free, in this respect, not left).

Aren’t there shortened shotshells (>2”) that reduce recoil, give more rounds, yet are short range effective?

I'm concerned about the rising ocean levels with all of the firearms lost in the water.

A few years ago, I read a story listing how every state rated number one at something. I don’t remember the source; I think it was The Daily Beast. For my current home state, Kentucky, it said Kentucky owned more guns per capita than any other state. Presumably we got that way because Kentucky has more than its share of hunters and servicemen. I interpreted that as good news.

For the state with the most firearms per capita, I put my money on Wyoming.

Several people shot in Chicago every week?

More like “A dozen shot every day, two of them fatally”.

Actually, what really matters is who in each state is armed. We know that Liberals hate guns, so I would say that in places like California, the “right people” have nearly all of the guns, I know I do.

“North Dakota. The sheer quantity of shotguns and hunting rifles throws the earth’s gravity slightly off balance here.”

Unfortunately, North Dakota isn’t the epicenter of civil unrest. You own guns for probably your interest in hunting, rather than your need for protection.

Crazy VT. But great! And I bet that they are not shooting each other with them too.
