NHS provokes fury with indefinite surgery ban for smokers and obese (socialized medicine)
The Telegraph ^ | 10-18-2017 | Laura Donnelly

The NHS will ban patients from surgery indefinitely unless they lose weight or quit smoking, under controversial plans drawn up in Hertfordshire.

The restrictions - thought to be the most extreme yet to be introduced by health services - immediately came under attack from the Royal College of Surgeons.

Its vice president called for an “urgent rethink” of policies which he said were “discriminatory” and went against the fundamental principles of the NHS.

In recent years, a number of areas have introduced delays for such patients - with some told operations will be put back for months, during which time they are expected to try to lose weight or stop smoking.

But the new rules, drawn up by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in Hertfordshire, say that obese patients “will not get non-urgent surgery until they reduce their weight” at all, unless the circumstances are exceptional.

The criteria also mean smokers will only be referred for operations if they have stopped smoking for at least eight weeks, with such patients breathalysed before referral.

True, but that should be a personal decision based on risk/benefit.

"Stop smoking and lose weight! Those things will KILL YOU!...

and we will KILL YOU by denying you medical treatment to make our point!"

My wife says I have an achilles heal regarding my kindness to and compasion for other human beings.

It kinda speaks to this article. i.e. I’m all for it in these two specific circumstances.

‘course, I have NO health insurance, so the concept of paying for surgery out of pocket is something that I think everyone should be legally allowed to do. At least that would be true in a remotely free country.

Heavy, long time, smokers are not good surgical risks.Neither are those who are substantially overweight.

Therefore, kill them.

I think if a person can prove that they have some sort of physical condition (hyperactive thyroid, etc.) that causes their obesity, they should be able to waive this restriction.

Smokers should be required to have a license and to have special insurance to cover COPD and cancer.

Agree but that’s a decision for a surgeon and the patient. Not the government.

Unless the government is paying for it, which is why I hate single payer and Obamacare.

You know that’s because it would significantly improve the outcome and benefit of the procedure, right?

Smokers should be required to have a license and to have special insurance to cover COPD and cancer.

..... because we are a land of licenses. In fact, there should be a license for posting on the internet, and a license for journalists, and every gun sold should be on a license that is for you. Furthermore, if you are overweight, you should get an Obesity license so that you can buy food. And every single condition should require special insurance.

Any failure to do the above, and the government should KILL YOU.

The prognosis for the elderly is often poor. Therefore, the government should KILL THEM.

Also, Elderly Licenses. Once you pass 50 years of age, you need to get an EL. All medical procedures will be denied the elderly, after all, their prognosis is worse than it is for younger people.

“Heavy, long time, smokers are not good surgical risks.Neither are those who are substantially overweight. “

If I were a doctor or hospital owner I would refuse them service.

However, if a government entity can deny service for any reasonable cause, it won’t be long before they deny service for political reasons.

That’s a very high risk proposition for White People.

That's the thing!

I have a 400 plus pound friend who had to get his knees replaced but still can't walk. It's all the doctor's fault.

What about people in the country illegally? Should they be allowed a surgery slot instead of a tax-paying, voting citizen?

You should need a license to get a license.

You should need a license to say you need a license to get a license.

America is so free.
