The image of those who fought in Vietnam is one of poorly educated, reluctant draftees — predominantly poor whites and minorities. But in reality, only one-third of Vietnam-era veterans entered the military through the draft, far lower than the 66 percent drafted in World War II.

It was the best-educated and most egalitarian military force in America’s history — and with the advent of the all-volunteer military, is likely to remain so. In WWII, only 45 percent of the troops had a high school diploma. During the Vietnam War, almost 80 percent of those who enlisted had high school diplomas, and the percentage was higher for draftees — even though, at the time, only 65 percent of military-age males had a high school diploma.

Throughout the Vietnam era, the median education level of the enlisted man was about 13 years. Proportionately, three times as many college graduates served in Vietnam than in WWII.

Another common assumption: The war in Vietnam was fought by youngsters wet behind the ears, who died as teenagers barely old enough to shave. In fact, more 52-year-olds (22) died in Vietnam than 17-year-olds (12). An analysis of data from the Department of Defense shows the average age of men killed in Vietnam was 22.8 years, or almost 23 years old.

Though the notion persists that those who died in Vietnam were mostly members of a minority group, it’s not true. About 5 percent of KIAs were Hispanic and 12.5 percent were black — making both minorities slightly under-represented in their proportion of draft-age males in the national population.

TRump could open the files on POWs and MIAs that McCain fought like crazy to seal. That could be interesting.

Even if there were something there that wouldn't phase McCain. The man's dying. He's going to take his hatred of Trump with him to the grave. McCain is in full-blown Moby Dick mode - "To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee."

We know when someone is resentful and full of hate and jealousy in the way words are used. Bush is now on that bandwagon because Jebb lost. Bush never fought back against Obama all those years. Hate is what the media wants. The watchers are addicted to hearing hate and loving it. It is the media’s best friend.

“Did he go after Romney, Quayle, Dubya, Billy Jeff, Obama and Jeff Flake?”

What about GW Bush who served in the National Guard? I have friends who are adamant that the Guard is/was the venue to avoid hard service overseas for rich kids and kids of politicians. (I don’t know myself, and have no opinion one way or another.)

When I took my physical for the draft in 1968 they reviewed my medical history. Two years prior I had a car wreck and broke my leg and dislocated it and cracked the femur cup of my pelvis

They took X-rays of it and pronounced me good to go. However, I got lucky as they instituted the lottery draft the next month and I got a high number.

If Donald had a bone spur they would have taken an x-ray.

And when he should have voted against the bail out, he caved and voted for it!

I agree Lavaroise.

That equality is always reached after a major purge.

Millions always wind up dying, before, during, and or after.

Not only that, millions of people lives are turned upside down as their nation craters. They lost their family, children, jobs, children, access to food and clean water...

Look at Venezuela. Here we go again, seeing the same thing all over again. Folks just don’t learn.

“Hey, it’ll work here!” (whenever/where ever it is proposed and people sign on)

Ah no, it won’t.

I don’t know if I ever remember him making a decision that would score well for conservatives.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the selected service number consists of? Btw, gotta be cautious about raw data unless it’s throughly understand. Example; we were discussing unit level (at least I was) deployment of reserve and the guard; most officers, 01,02, 03, especially in line outfit were classified as reserve officers and not as regular army even though they were in a regular army outfit.
