Malibu church pressured to end homeless dinners, with some saying it lures needy to upscale city

For 17 years, religious groups fed homeless people, and the city and private donors put up hundreds of thousands of dollars for social workers to find them housing and services.

But Malibu United Methodist Church — facing pressure from the city — in recent weeks took a U-turn, deciding twice-weekly dinners for homeless people would stop after Thanksgiving. The cutoff came after city officials summoned organizers and suggested they were attracting more homeless people and making the problem worse.

...

After the Metro's Expo Line opened to Santa Monica last year, neighbors began complaining of mentally ill and rough-looking characters camping at the beach and hanging out near schools.

"A homeless person was taking a shower in the girls locker room in middle school — that wasn't real good," said Gary Peterson, a retired developer and hotelier who quit the church's board of trustees over the meal issue. "Providing dinner is a nice thing to do and a good thing, but it's the location."

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department reported a surge in homeless nuisance calls and scattered crimes, although not necessarily committed by transients; one woman woke to find a naked man standing over her bed.

Some homeless people believed residents were reacting against an influx of African Americans from Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles. Malibu is 90% white. "People don't want to see homeless people around," said Tyrone Valiant, 70, as he waited outside the Malibu library for a bus. "Now they're cutting off the food."

“People don’t want to see homeless people around,” said Tyrone Valiant, 70, as he waited outside the Malibu library for a bus. “Now they’re cutting off the food.”

No, you don’t mean it do you Tyrone?

Malibu is infested with bubble dwelling Lear Jet liberals who demand we be accepting of the "riff raff" of society and live amongst them anything else is classiest, and likely racist and xenophobic and ad nauseum. But if these "undesirables" step foot on their "turf", that's so declasse . And it's the same way anywhere these hypocrites live. The Clinon's mansion is in Chappaqua, NY an "old money " town with not one Sq foot of Section 8 housing. Whoopi Goldberg's mansion is in Tuxedo park,an exclusive, gated subdivision that has only 4 Black people living there. Michael Moore owns on of most valuable pieces of real estate along the Great Lakes in Torch Lake, MI, a town that's over 96% White and boasts a grand total of 2 count 'em 2 Native Americans.

Reality meets ideology head on. Ideology lost as it usually does.

I lived in Malibu and Seattle.

Both share the same hypocrisy. Super liberal but live behind guarded gates that the US Army would be hard-pressed to breach.

The important thing is you FEEL good — you don’t actually SEE the untouchables!

I am surprised there isn’t an ID check on Kanan/Dume and Malibu Canyon and another at Sunset/PCH.

Oh and Trancas.

These high-minded elitists don’t want the hoi polloi in their neighborhood. Nor do they want their neighbors taking care of the hoi polloi. They might lose some of the underclass they so lovingly exploit. I mean, don’t these people understand that the only real compassion is performed with other people’s money?

I’m sure most of the people at this Methodist Church were very well off and probably elderly - and probably lived in a “better” neighborhood than where the church was, which may have been more or less middle class. The churches in my town are always slapping themselves on the back for having “feeding programs” in my neighborhood, where of course neither ministers nor congregation lives (most of the small surviving congregation lives in the gated subdivisions). It does indeed attract fighting, nasty bums, along with drugged out throw away kids, and all the churches do is provide food and then criticize the residents for complaining.

If they used this to go out and evangelize or even try to get the salvageable people into treatment programs, that would be a whole different matter. But all they do is make themselves feel good about themselves.

So the good denizens of Malibu aren’t onboard with Øbama’s HUD anti-zoning plan? Quelle suprize. If one of thosr molested actresses wobs a Malibu beach house when all this shakes out, they should tear it down and put up a Section 8 apartment housr.

Hey, I meant for them to be in OTHER peoples' back yards, not mine!
