Can Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon survive the Larry Nassar scandal?
NBC News ^ | January 22, 2018 | TRACY CONNOR

Larissa Boyce stood in a Michigan courtroom, the 89th accuser to tell her story of having been sexually assaulted by gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

All the accounts are chillingly similar, but Boyce's stands out — because she says she tried to get someone to stop Nassar two decades ago.

"I told somebody," she said during her testimony Friday. "I told Michigan State University back in 1997."

Although Nassar is best known as the former team physician for USA Gymnastics — a role in which he allegedly molested Olympic gold medalists like Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber — his busy sports medicine practice was at Michigan State, or MSU, and most of his accusers were treated there.

As NBC News reported last year, there are troubling questions about whether MSU officials ignored signs that Nassar was abusing girls and women under the guise of medical treatment and whether its response to the scandal was vigorous enough.

In recent weeks, as a series of Olympic gymnasts announced that they were victims and brought more attention to the case, the drumbeat to hold MSU accountable and for university President Lou Anna Simon to step down has grown ever louder.

Simon, who has been president since 2004 ...must have known something was going on. If she had taken over recently, in the last couple of years, that would have been different.

I can’t get past that it’s NBC, part of the MSM, questioning the integrity of another organization.

This is buried at the end of the story: even after the pedophile was suspended, the MSU gymnastics coach asked team members to sign a card for him. Holy crap!

I have yet to hear a convincing argument that Simon should resign. She is not known for ignoring problems that are brought to her attention. She has brought a lot of $$ to MSU, especially with the FRIB project. Seems to me people are just looking for a scapegoat. Under her leadership MSU has truly become a world class institution.

You sound like a apologist for this guy.

He too didn’t know of any abuses ongoing at his university.

Yeah Right.

I don’t remember seeing this covered during the last Olympics on NBC though I do remember reading a story on ESPN, I think.

I think both Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio may have to worry about their tenure as head coaches there. If we find out that they knew about Nasser’s predatory behavior but didn’t report it to the MSU campus police or the Lansing Police Department, both could lose their jobs.

Thank you for the additional info. “Unclear on the concept” there at MSU, it seems.

She’s been president since 2004, and the new accuser said, “I told Michigan State University back in 1997.” Thanks Tax-chick.

Neither Dantonio nor Izzo have female players on their teams, so I'm not sure how they would have found out.

The Gymnastics coach Kathie Klages was allowed to resign, but she was the one who was told repeatedly by her athletes what Nassar was doing.

Klages, like all coaches, worked for the Athletic Director Mark Hollis, who should be the one on the chopping block.

You may be right, and it has nothing to do with Nassar.....

Now THIS is the type of thing that could get the NCAA directly involved because of the lack of institutional control clause.

__________

As a Pittsburgh guy, I think of Michigan State by remembering this great quote:

A few years ago when Michigan State's coach George Perles was questioned about how he could rationalize giving the ball to his running back 55 times in the game..... he replied:

"It ain't heavy and he's not in a union."

LOL
