In blow to GOP, Supreme Court won’t block PA redistricting

The Supreme Court is allowing a court-ordered redrawing of congressional districts in Pennsylvania to proceed, denying a plea from Republicans to block it.

Justice Samuel Alito on Monday rejected emergency appeals from Republican legislative leaders and voters to block an order from the state Supreme Court to devise new congressional districts. The state high court ruled last month that the 18 districts violated Pennsylvania’s constitution because they unfairly benefited Republicans.

The state court gave lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf three weeks to submit a replacement plan, after which the state justices might draw up their own map.

The Supreme Court typically does not review state court decisions based on a state’s constitution. But the Republicans asked the high court to make an exception.

Alito handles emergency appeals from Pennsylvania.

Initially unsure which “PA” they referred to.

Then I asked myself, “What’s the difference?”

"State Justices might draw their own map"

As if they're qualified to do so?

We got ambushed in an off-year election when the unions cranked it up to 11 to stack the State Supreme Court with Leftists.

There was a method to their madness.

It’s in the State constitution that the lines must benefit ‘RATS. /sarc

There is no such thing as politically neutral so if the districting stops benefiting Republicans it will start benefiting Democrats.

This is certainly contrary to Bush vs. Gore.

Just because there are more voters in some Philly districts than eligible citizens of voting age doesn’t mean that there is voter fraud in PA. Yes, that’s sarcasm…another case of the courts subverting justice.

This affects House races but not Senate or Presidential.

Unbelievable. Shame on Alito for allowing this illegal fiat to go forward and attempt to steal 5 House seats for the Democrats.

"State Justices might draw their own map" // "As if they're qualified to do so?"

The average 5-yr-old with a crayon could probably make more logical districts than most states have.

And on what Constitutional grounds should the Supreme Court have taken the matter up?

The map of Pennsylvania's congressional districts is ridiculous. Take a look at districts 11 and 12 for example. But - of course - if the Democrats drew up the map, it would look just as ridiculous. There's got to be a better way.

PA Supremes have no standing to order a remap. It’s a partisan fiat from a partisan court. That should’ve been shot down in a heartbeat from a higher court, period.

Would you prefer straighter lines that swap 5 Republicans for 5 Democrats ? That’s the only reason the PA Supremes ordered this illegal dictate.

The ex-geometry teacher in me would prefer neater and straighter districts. They would at least seem to be less openly-biased. But I will admit that there is nothing in the US or Pennsylvania Constitutions that prohibit funny-looking districts.

PA Supremes have no standing to order a remap.

Sure they do, when they determine that the boundaries of the congressional districts as drawn violates the state constitution. And since it is a state constitution matter then the U.S. Supreme Court should quite rightly stay out of it.

It’s a partisan fiat from a partisan court.

Ruling on partisan congressional district boundaries drawn by a partisan legislature. Can't use partisan politics to your benefit then complain if it's used against you in return.
