When Israel Ignorantly Blames the Holocaust on the Poles, It Boosts Their Illiberal Nationalists

Contrary to other European countries, such as France or Norway, Poland was directly controlled by Nazi Germany. There was no puppet regime in Poland to assist the Germans, like the Vichy or Quisling governments, and the Nazis annexed parts of the country, while putting the rest under the control of a German governor, Hans Frank.

Frank subjected Poland to a terror "much fiercer and more protracted [...] than anywhere in Europe," scholar Norman Davies says, as cited by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

This terror included capital punishment for offering any help to Jews. While it’s true that Poles aided, abetted and participated in the Holocaust (an estimated 200,000 Jews were killed, directly or indirectly, by Poles), it is also true that 6,500 Poles were recognized as righteous among nations, more than in any other country, and it is widely considered that this number is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Nazi terror also included the killing of at least a million and a half Polish civilians, as well as a cultural genocide aimed specifically to make the Poles into better laborers for their German masters. While in France intellectuals were free to continue their efforts - Sartre, for instance, produced his magnum opus Being and Nothingness in 1943 in occupied Paris - the Polish intelligentsia was practically obliterated.

Considering, then, that Poland was under direct Nazi rule, that this regime was ruthless toward Polish civilians, and that aiding Jews was a capital offense, Poland’s consternation at being accused of national complicity with the Nazis is reasonable.

From Wikipedia:

“On July 4, 1946, the local Jewish gathering of some 200 Holocaust survivors from the Planty 7 Street refugee centre of the Zionist Union became the target of the Kielce pogrom in which 37 (40) Polish Jews (17–21 of whom remain unidentified) and 2 ethnic Poles were killed, including 11 fatally shot with military assault rifles and 11 more stabbed with bayonets, indicating direct involvement of the Stalinist troops.”

This would seem to bolster Poland’s position that they not be blamed for the events of that time.

“Contrary to other European countries, such as France or Norway, Poland was directly controlled by Nazi Germany.”

The fact that the USSR eliminated any Polish resistance before the Nazis seized eastern Poland in Barbarossa is conveniently ignored as well (see Katyn Forest for example); Poland is well within their rights to protect themselves from this slander about “Polish” death camps.

Middle East and terrorism, occasional political and Jewish issues Ping List. High Volume If you’d like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

..................

Writer is a liberal Jew hater, Israel has said no such thing.

While there's little question there was less cooperation with the Nazis in Poland, actually not a country, than in other major European occupied countries, but please don't mention that. It's illegal, since it points out there was some cooperation amongst the citizenry.

Polish death camps were an election issue, thus the bill from far right legislators. Foolish to sign, I predict if not repealed it will be an election issue again.

And yes, the entire issue, embarrassing for Poland, is the fault of der Juden.

Polish Neo-Fascists Denounce Jewish Opposition to Holocaust Bill as ‘Israeli Aggression’ During Warsaw Rally. Just a bunch of "Jewish smears". “Take off the Kippah (Jewish skull cap)! Sign the Bill!”, " Polish state cannot be left defenseless against the Israeli, Jewish smear", declare the Israeli Ambassador persona non gratta. "“Stop Jewish Arrogance”", Poland as a “vassal of the Jewish circles,”

I'd suggest there are antisemites in Poland today, but illegal to say so.

Ironic, the most prominent individuals to use the phrase Polish death camps were President Obama, not Jewish, and James Comey. Yes, that James Comey

Definitely, my heart is with the Polish people reclaiming their narrative. God bless them.

“(an estimated 200,000 Jews were killed, directly or indirectly, by Poles)”

The “estimate” comes from another Jew who make a living off such nonsense. Both should soon be confronted with lawsuits.

“And yes, the entire issue, embarrassing for Poland”

It's not “embarrassing for Poland” at all. It's the common sense approach and oy veys of Israeli far rights and others will be ignored.

Common sense. If you say so

There wasn't a single Polish Jewhater or Nazi collaborator. Not a one. Should President Komorowski be jailed for apologizing for the murders at Jedwabne. Or in Stalinesque fashion didn't that happen. Wasocz? Fiction? And there were other incidents, though as I mentioned, fewer in occupied Poland than any other occupied nations I can think of. Guess I can't say that any more, the correct number being zero. Too bad.

BTW, as I noted earlier the issue of "Polish Death Camps" didn't arise from Israel. The most prominent individuals I can think of using that term of late are American Christian liberals.

If so, I think this shoud be said in public too. Know the fact that there were two concentration camps in Lodz since 1942. Actually, one of them was the Jewish Ghetto, the other one was the concentration camp for the "Polish catholic Aryan" children.

Many Polish children tried to escape from that horrible place, yet their only possible way out was leading through the Jewish Ghetto, where Jewish Cappo (internal police working for Germans) caught and handed them over to the place where they came from - straight to firing squads.

Hundreds of Polish children are estimated to be executed this way.

The entire dispute is the province of historians, not legislators either in Israel or Poland. In the Ukraine, you have Russian denial, just as you have it in Turkey regarding the Armenians, so someone ought to stand up for the victims, at least symbolically. But in the case of Poland, it’s splitting hairs. The Polish government did not collaborate with the Nazis. In fact, the only Polish government at the time was the one in exile. Individual Poles either collaborated vilely, protected Jews heroically, or did nothing, but none of them acted on behalf of Poland one way or the other.

Germany didn’t pay reparations to Poland, the most affected country.

What is the reason for your hysterical reaction? Perhaps if Israeli politicians would not go the populist way and tried to consume some anti-Polish sentiment among some of their voters then nationalist in Poland would stay home? If they continue this pathetic narration, they will earn more and more enemies. It is as simple as that.

I agree. I also think that law was an antisemitic trick that grievance addled Jews and Poles fell for
