Ted Cruz signals fight over Trump diplomat pick who spread 'tinfoil hat' conspiracy theories

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz signaled a bruising fight Thursday if the White House pushes ahead with the nominee for a coveted Caribbean diplomatic post who spread unfounded conspiracy theories about him during the 2016 campaign.

As an ardent cheerleader for Donald Trump, beauty supply executive Leandro Rizzuto Jr. used Twitter to promote an unsubstantiated allegation that Cruz cheated on his wife, and other claims that Heidi Cruz herself was part of a cabal seeking to unite North America under one government.

"I don't know the fellow. He seems to have unusual views," Cruz said Thursday through an aide. "I expect he'll have an interesting and vigorous confirmation process."

On Wednesday, the White House dug in behind Rizzuto, a senior executive at Conair, a family-owned company. The president named him a month ago as ambassador to Barbados and other island nations.

One of Cruz's colleagues in the Senate, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, deemed his "tinfoil hat" kookiness incompatible with the post but the White House has stood by him since CNN discovered that during the 2016 campaign, Rizzuto spread smears about a number of Trump's GOP rivals, including Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

"The President looks forward to Leandro Rizzuto's swift confirmation by the Senate, and is confident he will be a great Ambassador to the Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines," said deputy White House press secretary Lindsay Walters.

FULL TITLE: Ted Cruz signals fight over Trump diplomat pick who spread 'tinfoil hat' conspiracy theories about him

Rizzuto promoted allegations from the National Enquirer that Cruz had cheated on his wife, and that she "was a leading member in an effort to combine the governments of the U.S., Canada and Mexico," CNN reported.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, Ted. We remember what you yourself said about President Trump at the same time.

Get over the primaries; they’re DONE.

I certainly don’t blame Cruz (and others) for resisting this person’s appointment. Just because the ‘RATS employ and reward sleazy individuals and activities doesn’t mean we should also.

I wonder if Cruz is still miffed about the Rafael Cruz-Lee Harvey Oswald thing?

We remember what you yourself said about President Trump at the same time.

What did he say? I mean, what did he say before Trump went after his wife?

Get over the primaries; they’re DONE.

Score-setting is a time-honored part of politics. It's one reason why politicians love politics so much.

I could see Trump throwing this douchebag out there to let Ted get his pound of flesh for something in return later.

I have no issues with Senator Cruz opposing this guy. If I were Senator Cruz, I would taken offense to these claims, too. Frankly, given the circumstances, I'd think Senator Cruz a wimp if he didn't oppose him.

There were some very solid people in the Trump circle of supporters and there were some people in the Trump circle of supporters who were loons. This guy appears to be in the latter camp.

Probably but what I don’t get is why Cruz thought his father should be off limits. Cruz’s father was out there on the campaign saying terrible things about Trump and how Trump would be worse than Hillary Clinton. Don’t want your family attacked, don’t use them in the campaign. Fair enough?
