Top Justice Department official Brand quit partly over fear she might oversee Russia probe (tr)

The Justice Department's No. 3 attorney had been unhappy with her job for months before the department announced her departure on Friday, according to multiple sources close to Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand.

Brand grew frustrated by vacancies at the department and feared she would be asked to oversee the Russia investigation, the sources said.

She will be leaving the Justice Department in the coming weeks to take a position with Walmart as the company's executive vice president of global governance and corporate secretary, a job change that had been in the works for some time, the sources said.

Should Rosenstein be fired, Brand would be next in line to oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, thrusting her into a political spotlight that Brand told friends she did not want to enter.

The Justice Department pushed back on NBC's report.

"It is clear these anonymous sources have never met Rachel Brand let alone know her thinking. All of this is false and frankly ridiculous,” said Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Flores.

Rosenstein is not going to be fired. Potentially, he might quit. But he won’t be fired.

Well, Walmart will require results. Not sure working for the state dept. gualifies her to produce results?

We speculated on that here on FR the other day. She does not want all the drama associated with it.

It’s a credible theory - if it didn’t come from NBC.

Nah. The "Russia investigation" is a nothingburger and not very scary.

More likely she quit because she feared she would have to oversee the Deep State investigations

You know, it’s probably a wrong perception, but doesn’t it look like the ‘Rats at the DOJ and FBI are fleeing the sinking ship?

At any rate, it either indicates that the rats are scurrying or that there a boat load of spineless people working at the DOJ, etc.

She may have also been told or sensed that her career was limited. If Rosenstein were to leave (I don’t think he will be fired nor am I convinced he should be), and she had a feeling that someone else would become his replacement, then now’s a good time to jump ship. Especially when she’s taking on water already and there’s icebergs all around.

The old “I’m afraid I might be tasked with doing my job” excuse....

She knows the evidence strongly points to Mrs. Bill Clinton and she doesn't have the guts to be a part of it.

She has been in DC since law school. She is part of the problem and not the answer. I am glad that she is leaving. Trump has the chance to put some new blood at the top of the DOJ. One can only hope that it is a lawyer who supports the constitution.

That interview with Joe DiGenova on another thread said that many were spilling the beans. Great to know.

For all her DC experience her lack of trial experience is noteworthy. She never served in DOJ as trial attorney - the most coveted legal positions in the US government because the payoff down the road is huge if you are good.
