Switzerland has a stunningly high rate of gun ownership — here's why it doesn't have mass shootings

Switzerland hasn't had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself.

The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 homicides with firearms. The country's overall murder rate is near zero.

The National Rifle Association often points to Switzerland to argue that more rules on gun ownership aren't necessary. In 2016, the NRA said on its blog that the European country had one of the lowest murder rates in the world while still having millions of privately owned guns and a few hunting weapons that don't even require a permit.

But the Swiss have some specific rules and regulations for gun use.

I’m going to guess that it’s because 15% of their under-age-26 population isn’t spaced out on psychotropic drugs.

So, Switzerland has only about 1 private gun for every 4 people. Here in America, we have 1 gun per person, on the average - FOUR times as many at the other country. PLUS, we have WAY more minorities with poor impulse control. So that is an apples to toadstools comparison.

The swiss govt at any time could change its mind and require every person to turn all their guns in. That’s not a govt-protected right to self defense.

None of those points, valid as they may be, relates to mass shooting events as far as I can tell.

With possible exception to your second point about “fit to own” depending on how the Swiss apply that one.

What the Swiss don’t have is 100 years of appointed bureaucrats abusing their authority to deny permits to qualified people.

I’d have been willing to accept Swiss-style controls if the shall-issue reform movement had passed quickly and universally without opposition.

But when the very people who are arguing for Swiss-style controls are to this day fighting to retain the ability to deny permits without cause, I’ll be damned if I’m going to give them more authority to abuse.

Too many non white Europeans. The common thread between Switzerland, Japan, Iceland or other countries is no mixing of cultures. Now that the Europeans are allowing in the Africans and Middle Easterners, they are learning the hard way. Cultures don’t mix, except for in that golden age of America before the rabble rousers found out they could destroy this country from within with just a little division. In fact they divided us by forcing an end to segregation.

Now, I think segregation was wrong, but to force an end to it was the wrong thing to do. Just as it was wrong to fight to keep the Confederacy from going their own way.

The US media chooses to get all excited about incidents involving crazy young people with guns. Of course, the US media does not dwell on the “crazy” part. And the US media certainly does not look at the role that psychotropic drugs play. No, the US media only wants to look at the “guns” aspect.

But “incidents involving crazy young people with guns” are actually quite rare. They are tragedies but they are not commonplace. They are simply useful to push the Leftwing narrative.

The real problem that the US has (and which Switzerland does not have) is ... *cough* ... demographic.

I have spent some time in Switzerland, Geneva to be specific, and while it is a nice place to visit I would not want to live there. To begin with you pretty much need to be a multimillionaire to live the same lifestyle I do in Alabama on about $100k.

Such pathetic garbage.

My specific rule and regulation would be for liberals/leftists, and mental patients (most cases one in the same) to never have access to firearms. I would have also outlawed liberalism as a clear and present danger to America. This would have saved two Presidents, (they have their eyes on a third and do not hide it), and tens of thousands of Americans in every walk of life. Yes, tongue and cheek but this is what the left wants from us: extinction/outlaw of Conservatism and the Constitution as intended specifically stripping the 2A.

Because white people have such good impulse control, right?

Like Dylan Roof, the Columbine killers, the Sandy Hook shooter, etc etc etc

Yeah, and Vermont has Constitutional Carry and a low Crime Rate, even though it’s packed full of Liberals, about 95% lily White Liberals.

Still, it’s a wonder that with 2 Million privately held guns in the country, NOT ONE of those guns has gone on a mass shooting rampage since 2001.
