For the first time, the U.S. government has publicly acknowledged the existence in Washington of what appear to be rogue devices that foreign spies and criminals could be using to track individual cellphones and intercept calls and messages.
The use of what are known as cellphone-site simulators by foreign powers has long been a concern, but American intelligence and law enforcement agencies which use such eavesdropping equipment themselves have been silent on the issue until now.
In a March 26 letter to Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, the Department of Homeland Security acknowledged that last year it identified suspected unauthorized cell-site simulators in the nations capital. The agency said it had not determined the type of devices in use or who might have been operating them. Nor did it say how many it detected or where.

DUH! I swear our ruling class is composed of luddites and idiots.
DOH!....with Odungo you can bet on it
Cell companies could thwart this be turning on authentication and encryption for towers.
But they don’t. Yes it creates a little more overhead but if we really care about privacy we would. Govt can still get a warrant to listen in but would have to go through cell company and couldn’t just do it themselves. Which is another reason why we need this change.
They are in Washington State also. I have tracked down THREE so far.
The Keystone COPS using Billion$ to fund their 17 IC Agencies running all over each other in Budget Battles can’t keep themselves safe from the Rooskies?
Exactly.
Exactly. As much as I hate the ACLU, I am forwarding to them all the data I have compiled for a class action lawsuit and let us shine the light of day on this.
How far is Odungo’s present DC headquarters from the White House?
I dunno, less than a mile I would guess.
...on the map, what dies the gray area represent?.....using a smartphone,I can’t read the ledger..
I, as many on this thread have suggested, would like to see this solved. Technology that would stop a lot of this would stop the gov from spying on us. Where's the downside?
Foreign spies and criminals (US agents).
Never mind...I got it.. Thanks
Cover for leaks.
It would not surprise me if there were over 200 of these devices in operation around the US, and like you say...some are foreign spy operations...some are probably commercial business spy situations...and some are just plain criminal gangs working on data theft or listening in to figure robbery opportunities.
It wouldn’t even surprise me if all one-hundred senators are being spied upon twenty-four hours a day. Some lobbyist group could be looking for weak points and simply find blackmailable opportunities to get some idiot Senator to flip.
Just pay google or facebook a little, and you can have access to all the data you want. You can listen to conversations. Pinterest listens. How many apps “listen” to what you’re doing and saying?
