Prominent Lawyer in Fight for Gay Rights Dies After Setting Himself on Fire in Prospect Park
New York Times ^ | April 14, 2018 | JEFFERY C. MAYS

A lawyer nationally known for being a champion of gay rights died after setting himself on fire in Prospect Park in Brooklyn early Saturday morning and leaving a note exhorting people to lead less selfish lives as a way to protect the planet, the police said.

The remains of the lawyer, David S. Buckel, 60, were found near Prospect Park West in a field near baseball diamonds and the main loop used by joggers and bikers.

Mr. Buckel left a note in a shopping cart not far from his body and also emailed it to several news media outlets, including The New York Times.

Mr. Buckel was the lead attorney in Brandon v. County of Richardson, in which a Nebraska county sheriff was found liable for failing to protect Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was murdered in Falls City, Neb. Hilary Swank won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Mr. Teena in the 1999 movie “Boys Don’t Cry.”

While serving as marriage project director and senior counsel at Lambda Legal, a national organization that fights for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Mr. Buckel was the strategist behind important same-sex marriage cases in New Jersey and Iowa.

Friends said that after he left the organization, Mr. Buckel became involved in environmental causes, which he alluded to in his note as the reason he decided to end his life by self-immolation with fossil fuels.

Nobody deserves to die like this.

Agreed, but it was self inflicted, so my sympathy meter simply isn't moving.

I hope you have recovered...getting burned is a terrible thing to endure...

Nobody deserves to die like this.

A pretty good argument could be made that those who intentionally set themselves on fire deserve to die like this.

“serving as marriage project director and senior counsel at Lambda Legal, a national organization that fights for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people”...........

Even with those heavy credentials, most of the responses I’ve read show that very few care about his self cremation.

And now onto yesterday’s sport news..........

True dat. The world doesn’t miss you when you’re gone.

Killing yourself doesn’t even advance the things you care about most.

Life brings with it things we don’t like. Deal with it!

leaving a note exhorting people to lead less selfish lives as a way to protect the planet

He is being selfish when he is being true to his deepest feeling an allows his innermost nature to call on him to act in this specific way

Suicide is a selfish act.

The irony of it was completely oblivious to a guy who called on others to lead less selfish lives.

What a waste.

So, in essence, he wanted to create a martyr to a cause, so that martyr - himself - would become a new rallying point for it.

His self-centered arrogance about himself was already obvious in the legal arguments he used in the New Jersey case. New Jersey already had a civil partnership law and the “marriage” ruling altered nothing at all in terms of essential protections for a “gay” couple. Like all similar rulings it was not about “protections” for the persons in the civil partnership, it was about using law to mandate social acceptance. From those rulings “education” has drawn cause to incorporate that mandate of social acceptance into the curriculum. It all, in a deep sense, is not about freedom and Liberty but a denial of freedom of Liberty for everyone who disagrees with the idea that their thought be corrected, in accordance with the law.

Sick freak accomplished nothing except to take one more liberal lawyer out of the courtrooms. So there is no negative to this at all.

... Gay Rights ...

What they say is "gay rights." What they mean is gay privileges to allow them to legally do what the rest of us can't like suing a baker for not wanting to do business with them.

As most of us I know a number of homosexual people of both genders. Some are just like anyone else except for their sexual preference which is only one dimension of their persona and doesn't really play into your interaction with them. But others have only that one dimension - the gay/queer dimension - they're in your face queer every time you see them. Example - went to a party with coworkers, and one brought his partner who introduced himself as "Hi I'm Gary and I'm a gay man." Like anyone gives a crap. How do you communicate with someone like that and more to the point why would you want to?

If he was intent on making it happen, he should have picked Friday.

It was the "Blame-Someone-Else Day" this year.

National Blame Someone Else Day is always celebrated on the first Friday the 13th of the year.

So the NYT is certain he died AFTER setting himself on fire, and not before?

Why is it these gays end up with an 'icky gay face' like his? It's like their deviant sexual behavior distorts their appearance over time.

Leading by example. Too few of the undesirables do so.

Suicide is very common for those who are deep into a compulsive deviant sexual fetish .... Goes hand in glove with their distorted mental, physical and belief system they’ve opted to follow and practice. Worse for those who lead others to do likewise. ..people who live in their own fantasy world take sick pleasure in coercing people into their fantasy. They are abnormal, and they know it - but they figure it’s easier to change other people’s minds than to change and be normal.
