Newt Gingrich: The ‘experts’ were wrong in 2016; they could be wrong in 2018 too
Fox News ^ | May 8, 2018 | Newt Gingrich

As you watch the 2018 campaign being analyzed by pundits on TV, in newspapers, and in blogs, just remember how wrong they all were in 2016.

They were wrong about candidate Donald J. Trump all through the primaries.

They were wrong about the impact of the Republican and Democratic conventions.

They were wrong throughout the fall campaign – and they kept telling us why each new headline signified the end of Trump’s candidacy.

Finally, they were wrong on Election Day, up until the actual results gave them no alternative but to accept the reality that Trump had won as a total outsider and defeated the ultimate insider – a former first lady, U.S. senator, and secretary of state.

Since then, the national media have remained ignorant of political realities. Their thinking is clouded by their hostility to the Trump presidency, their incestuous and incessant gossip about what they define as important, and their isolation from the Americans who voted for and continue to support President Trump.

At the end of last year, the elites told us there was going to be a blue wave in 2018 and that the GOP could lose the House and might lose the Senate.

The Blue Wave should be a Ripple.

The key will be voter turnout on our side. President Trump cannot do it all.

Its not just about “being wrong.”

Much of our media willfully pushes lies or half-truths, to support a particular narrative. In the case of future predictions, they can say literally say whatever opinion they need, in order to push their propaganda.

Exactly, and as things continue to improve worldwide and domestically more and more are becoming aware of the lies of the media.

It will help us in the midterms.

Could be Newt? What would make you think the Democrats have a chance of losing less than 8 in the Senate and less than 8 in the House?

Are they?
Not the blue dogs.

The only ones who are mad and motivated are those inside the entitlement sphere who don’t care about job availability, levels of take-home pay, or the economy. It’s the rabid CNN/NYT/MSNBC types.

On the other side, why wouldn’t Trump supporters be motivated? What with the hounding investigation and the obstructive slow-footed congress?

The House might be in trouble, as so many incumbents have left, or are not running for reelection. It really depends on how they campaign.

As for the Senate, the GOP might even pick up seats.

Zero chance the GOP loses the senate. In fact I would expect they will gain as many as 6 or more seats there...

In the house, well, unless something drastically changes in the GOP ecosphere, and they stop running rovesque campaigns and actually start talking to those non traditional MAGA voters, and give them a reason to show up... the GOP will lose the house.

If they don’t motivate that voter base to care and show up the GOP will lose 10 seats in the upper Midwest alone and many purple and pink districts will go blue.

Some factors are in GOP’s favor. Economy etc. But Dems are less likely to be overconfident, as in 2016. The GOP could lose some seats in the House and still keep the majority.

Overconfidence as apathy. I get that.
But everyone is pushing the ‘blue wave’ junk. I don’t see how you’d feel too comfortable now

Right, their media characters want to motivate them via the "blue wave" mantra. There is always something like that. Anything more complicated would confuse the little people.

Personally, I don't think they will take over either house of congress, but the election is several months away.

The primaries in many states today can be an indicator. It’s not equivalent to a general election but it can show whether there is apathy or excitement for either side

No, it was the fourth battle victory in the Tea Party Revolution (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016).

“If they don’t motivate that voter base to care and show up the GOP will lose 10 seats in the upper Midwest alone and many purple and pink districts will go blue.”

The polls continue to show a significant shift in Trump’s direction. If that continues until November, there may well be a “red wave” instead of a “blue wave”.

With all the RINO and deep state retirements in Congress, we might just end up with some people that’ll do some good!

Don’t bet on it.

Unless the GOP changes course FAST, its facing a beating in the house.

Turnout is always the key to midterms, and the GOP is sucking more than Mexico during the time of Ross Perot.

Look at the last AZ special election for example...

Democrat candidate got numbers near a presidential race turnout.. while the GOP only got around midterm numbers. The only reason she won was because that district was so red that even with Presidential Election year turnout numbers it wasn’t more than that districts midterm turnout numbers for Republicans.

There are a LOT of Purple and Pink districts that are going blue this fall... it won’t be a 1994 or 2010, but it will certainly ben more than the 22 needed by Dems to take the house.

If the only people R’s are going to engage and talk to are their reliable base, they are going to LOSE a lot of marginal districts... PERIOD.

The sad simple fact is, the GOP doesn’t want to get its head out of its arse and talk to the MAGA voter, or the MAGA agenda.... It wants to keep on running the same old tired way it always has.. and that’s leading it to a big house defeat this fall.

The election dynamic is quite simply this... for the nevertrumpers and the dems, the fall is a referendum on Trump... they are going to crawl over broken glass to vote.... they are going to have huge turnouts everywhere.... For everyone else the midterms are just that, midterms, a referendum on the local candidate and/or the republicans in general. The republican establishment has not given the non traditional Trump/MAGA voter one reason to give a damn, let alone be motivated and show up for them this fall.. not one.

Their messaging is the same tired messaging they have been using for 20 years.. it didn’t motivate those folks to show up then, it won’t motivate them to show up this fall.

Hell, look at the WV Senate primary! You have an absolute goof, who may actually wind up with the nomination.... because as screwed up as this goof is, he’s basically running on the Trump agenda... THe GOP has no clue who the electorate is, and doesn’t even want to try to understand it... This guy shouldn’t get the time of day, and someone as goofy as this guy should never be anything more than 10-20% blip... but he is honestly within striking distance of the nomination... and the simple reason is, the GOP is completely OUT OF TOUCH!!!

Trump showed them how to win for a generation or more, and they continue to just ignore it...

The only way I see the GOP holding the house this fall, if they keep on their current path and messaging, would be if the Democrats formally run openly on impeachment.. if they do that, then everyone will view the fall as a referendum on Trump and the GOP will likely win 20+ seats in spite of themselves... If they keep on the direction they are going, they will lose the house.

I am as sure of this, as I was Trump would win in 2016.... The writing is on the wall.
